Stork's Son-of-Zorro Build: Core i5-2500K - GA-Z68X-UD3H - HD 6850
Ah, and looking at the specs of the GA-Z68X-UD3H, i noticed it uses a Firewire VIA chipset. I've been reading here that it's kind of faulty in OSX and/or not fully supported if working at all. Is yours working ?
If not, i'd have...
Stork's Son-of-Zorro Build: Core i5-2500K - GA-Z68X-UD3H - HD 6850
Excellent ! Thank you !
It seems your "Son of Zorro" is looking very much like my future "Little Mermaid" - my singing new Hackintosh !
Except that i can get a quite cheap Radeon HD6870, which is close to yours...
That's good news ! And would be perfect for me as an i7 2700k (slightly oc'd) would be a sufficient beast for audio production (remember i'm at the moment using a MacPro1,1 Quad 3.0 for the task, and getting along with it hassle free ! But still want some kind of a speed bump). And i'll get a...
Yep, you're absolutely right... Sorry about that, but stumbling across here while using the search engine about hacks builds for PT, noticed you had more or less what i'm dreaming of... Although my control room is half the size of yours. So, in a kind of frantic manner after reading all this...
No problem ! 32GB RAM is more than enough for my needs ! And basically, my aim is not to replicate such a MacPro, because anyway i couldn't come close to such power with a single i7, even outrageously OC'ed... If I wanted that, i'd look for something like an EVGA SR-X board with dual Xeons...
Not afraid either, but when it comes to the overall system performance, i tend to be demanding. And although i bought Lion when it went out (at 1st tested on my home iMac 27, eventually went up to 10.7.4), i was more than deceived by its overall performance compared to SL (10.6.8). I had the...
 Now that's cool ! And you're going with the Intel Z77RE-75K board ? What version of OSX will you be running ? What version of PT do you use ? I read somewhere in this thread that you wanted to use an UAD Apollo, do you already have it ?
And hey ! 20+ years of PT ? Wow ! You must have...
Hhmm... Interesting point. But if TB isn't correctly recognized at the OS level, my guess is that it could well cause some issue (e.g "device not found" kind of stuff) when connecting devices that need a driver install, i.e specific kext to run (e.g a pro-audio interface). As opposed to devices...
Cool !
TB hot-swap will not be an issue at all, because its purpose will only be to plug an audio interface, which will stay there all the time. But in that case, my only concern would be to know if whether the TB port has indeed the full performance it is supposed to have while using...
Thanks for your response.
Well i think i'll be better off with a PCIe GPU then, because sharing the TB port between an audio device and a monitor isn't a good idea...
Browsing the forum, i've read that for audio applications the Ti FW chipset was a whole lot better than the VIA FW chipset, do...
Wow ! Awesome build, awesome studio, awesome thread…
I was initially planning a build to replace my aging MacPro1,1 to use it with ProTools 9HD along with my not really good but trusty Digi002R. But asking the good questions round here, i've been told that i couldn't run SL...
Yes... Bad news indeed. So i guess i'll have to spend my money on a PT10HD upgrade first. Looked on Ebay, I actually could find some between 650 and 750 USD (which is a lot better than the 1000+ Avid is asking for it). Consequently, this means also that i'll have to wait to build that dream...
Hmm ?? What exactly is Light Peak ? My Sandy Bridge iMac 27" is equipped with dual TB ports which is fully supported by SL 10.6.8, so i would guess Sandy Bridge is supporting TB, makes sense ?
Yes I already spent a lot of money on the update from PT8LE to PT9HD, and wasn't entitled for a free upgrade when PT10HD launched (because i updated to 9 too early !). But being in the music business, i can tell you that many pro-level studios are exactly in the same case as mine, and around me...
