UPDATE:

[Can play SD video and plays HD Trailers - there seems to be a problem with playability with items previously purchased]

So I've had my Hackintosh working for quite some time now (about 2 weeks, lol) and I have come into no hiccups until last night (and today):

iTunes will not play TV shows that I have purchased through the iTunes Store. It downloads them, attempts to play, but then shows a black screen and won't actually start up.

Here are the specs for my machine:

i7 3770k (Ivy Bridge) 3.5Ghz socket 1155
GA-Z77-DS3H
16 GB (4x4GB) 1600 Corsair Vengeance LP
OCZ SSD 120 GB Vertex 3
Seagate Barricuda 1TB 7200RPM 6.0 Gps Sata 3
Cooler Master 932 HAF
Razer Black Widow Stealth Keyboard
Razer Deathadder Mouse

EVGA GTX 570 2560mb
Asus V236H 23" LCD Monitor (1080P)

Software:

(Latest iTunes)
(Latest Lion)
(Latest Flash)
Currently using F3 for my MoBo (it worked OOB)

I've also tried loading the same files through Quicktime as well as VLC Media Player - to no success for either machine. I've tried rebooting the system, Re-downloading, Re-authorizing, and I still have the same problem. I've also tried downloading 720P and 1080P resolutions - both have the same problem.

I figured it was a GPU problem at first, but LuxMark and Heaven both clock in reasonably well. (1300/9600; 55-58FPS respectively) Although the RAM seems to barely get touched for those tests.

Geekbench clocks in nicely at 14184, so there doesn't seem to be any major performance problems that I can find.

I CAN play .MOV files in iPhoto (1080P)... just not m4v files as of right now.

Anyone have a similar problem or possible workarounds/solutions?

Would greatly appreciate being able to watch all seasons of White Collar on my full HD monitor!

All help is greatly appreciated!

I get HDCP authorization errors on my setup. Maybe it's something similar with you?

Well, all of my hardware is HDCP read. I've been able to play 1080p Movie Trailers without any issues. I can also play the same 1080p files that I cannot play through iTunes - I can play them on my iPhone 4S.

I tried downloading free HD 1080p and 720p video with no luck either.

Not really sure what to do about this or how to approach it. :(

HDCP footage seems unable to play despite an HDCP compliant monitor, GPU, and cable.

Thinking the problem MAY get fixed when Mountain Lion comes out, but until then, I still can't play my 100GB of purchased TV shows. =.

Any tips or ideas that I haven't already tried would be greatly appreciated!

Still having this same issue... :(

Believe it has something to do with HDCP...anyone with similar issues find a workaround?

Much thanks!

You cannot play protected content (HDCP) through an external monitor. ... not unless you have one of their newest Apple Cinema Displays. You'll just get a black screen. This is BY-DESIGN, by Apple. No protected HDCP movies output to an external monitor.

You can only play HDCP movies on an iMac, iphone, ipad, and Apple laptops with built-in monitors.

Workaround: Right click on the HD movie, select Version, and select Standard Definition (SD). It should now play.

also having this issue...

+1 to this.

trouble is I used to be able to play this iTunes stuff....so I am guessing that one of the iTunes "upgrades" has now crippled my ability to play legitimately bought iTunes HD content. Apparently if you have a new Apple Cinema Display, that is considered ok by Apple but putting it through my HDTV is not.

Some places say that if your computer does NOT have a display port connection then this will allow you to play iTunes HD content. Another thing is that it will play on built in monitors.

I cannot be bothered to spend hours on the workarounds but instead will never download iTunes HD content. However, things that might be tried to workaround I guess are:

Roll back iTunes to a version before they put in the limitation (problems: library will be screwed up); Try to fool the system that the monitor is built in; Try to fool the system that you do not have a displayport......

Really though, the biggest annoyance is that these limitations are brought in under the cover of improvements and are so limiting that they prevent users across the board from being able to watch purchased content as they see fit....instead it has to be as Apple see fit.

Try this:
I could not play purchased HD TV shows and movies from iTunes anymore! I finally figured it out to some extent, by that I mean I'm pretty sure this fixed my problem, though I'm not exactly sure why...yet.

I was, silly me, running itunes in 64 bit mode in ML. In order to get HD content to play on my hdmi connected Panasonic HD TV I have to run iTunes in 32 bit mode.

To run itunes in 32-bit mode, select the itunes application in the Finder, choose the "get info" command int he file menu, and check the "open in 32-bit mode" checkbox in the itunes info window.".....bada bing!

Not sure what kind of repercussions this might have yet but I can now watch Game of Thrones in HD! Hope this helps you all.

Starting iTunes in 32 bit mode does solve the problem, thank you for sharing this.
If anyone has a solution for movies not playing running iTunes in 64 bit mode please share!
