Hi Y'all,

Well got me old 2006 mac pro 1.1 running El Capitan 10.11.1

I have a Flashed ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB running fine.

Info is a bit thin on the ground but wondering if a GTX card* would now work, say a:

Gigabyte Nvidia Gtx 960 Gaming PCI-E Graphics Card

Presumably after installing new drivers? hmm wonder if it would fit!

I'm aware that there may be a bottleneck with the old mac, but maybe it would perform better?

Anyone done this kinda thing?

*I'm thinking i can stagger payments for a Hackintosh and make use of the bits as they come.

i have a stupid question to ask. What key do you press to get options to boot off of a USB disk?

I have an early 2006 mac pro 1.1 dual core with GeForce GT120 running Maverick 10.9.5.

My screen is blank through the startup so my operating system just appears fully loaded on Maverick.

have built the new USB install disk with Unibeast and El Capitan just need to figure out how to boot off the usb.

Also which EFI option did you select?

Sorry, can't help you there - mine's not a hackintosh.

Normal non hackintosh ways:

Select the USB in Startup disk?
Or working blind - hold Alt key on startup and press the arrow key left or right once after a few mins - then Enter.
Or get a VGA monitor to see startup screen.

Did you ever end up going through with this Duffloop? I am thinking of doing the same thing.

Hi Casey - aye I did - well, I got the:
MSI GeForce GTX 970 GAMING Twin Frozr 5 Graphics Card - 4GB - here

You will need the Nvidia driver - get the one specific to your system - Drivers here

Needs 2 power cables. (I think card came with a 6 to 8 pin converter)

Needed another mac to screen share to activate the Nvidia driver (in sys prefs), as you get a blank screen using the osx driver - luckily you get a basic low res view from another mac even without a card in.

Not a massive improvement but a useful upgrade for a future hackintosh ;-)

Let us know how you get on.

That's great!

I think it will be a huge improvement over the 7300 GT in there right now. I read somewhere that it is hard for the 2006 Mac Pro to utilize all of the 970's power, is this true? That is what made me think of a 960.

Also, are you running El Capitan with it or Yosemite? And is there any way to get a boot screen if the card is flashed?

Thanks so much for replying so quick

Hell yeh - much faster than 7300GT - I don't even think latest OSX allows that card, I'm on Yosemite now.
Presume you know you're gonna have to move to Yosemite to get it going? And it requires messing with the EFI etc?

No way to get boot screen I'm afraid - and no need to flash anyway.

Here's some stats to look at to compare it with my old flashed ATI 5870, much faster in Windows too:

Yeah I've been trying to think of a way to not have to buy a card just to get Yosemite and then upgrade to that.

I will be installing an SSD so I was thinking I might be able to use clover to install El Capitan or Yosemite on the SSD as if it were a hackintosh, and then download the drivers onto that from my Mavericks drive for the 960. I'm not sure if it will work though. I'd prefer not to have to get a card just to use as a stepping stone

Do you have access to another mac running Yosemite - or El Cap?

with pikes EFI it's fairly easy (essentially just a case of replacing some files in the actual Installer, or in fact the installed system if you can connect it externally)

Yes I do. I have a hackintosh as well as a MacBook Pro running El Capitan.

So will that video show me how to get it ready to install while I have the 7300 GT in the Mac Pro and then when I go to restart it the first time I just pop in the 960 or 970?

That's the dilemma I'm having.
