Hey everyone, just as I thought I was good to go with everything, this comes up.

I had Lion up and running and just left it so that I could clean up the mess I made building it. Sometime in that period the computer went to sleep. I came back to wake it up by clicking the mouse. The computer started up again, but the screen didn't turn on. I figured this was some kind of wake from sleep bug, so I held down the power button and the computer shut off after a few seconds. I go to turn it back on and now the computer will not start up at all when I hit the power button. I tried unplugging it, letting it "cool" (it was not hot), but it will not even turn on.

If I press the "CMOS SW" switch then power button on the motherboard flashes, but nothing happens. Pressing the power on the motherboard doesn't do anything. Pressing the "RST SW" doesn't do anything.

The computer has been running wonderful since I first booted it last night (it was shut down overnight) and gave me no problems today. As soon as my dad got home to inspect my progress, the thing doesn't turn on.

Anyone know what could be going on?

It is possible a hardware issue. What I would do is unplug the HDDs and try to boot into BIOS again. If you can, set BIOS again as per your original installation. If you can't get into BIOS, try reseating the RAM and the processor. Make sure all your connectors are fully seated and try again. If still no-go try using only one stick of RAM at a time, as one bad stick will prevent booting.

If you get it to boot above, then try booting from HDD, if not try an rBoot disc and see if that will get you in.

Still stuck, post more details and we will try to help you narrow it down.

Will do. I'm removing components now to see if that fixes it. So far i've taken out the SSD, HDD, wifi card, and FW800 card. Nothing so far. Will keeping going.

When you say reseat the ram and processor, you mean take them out of their actual sockets and put them back?

Worst case scenario i bring it into the micro center where I bought all the components. They have troubleshooting service and everything was bought 2 days ago. So if something goes bad, they should be able to help me.

Okay. I have removed the SDD, HDD, FW 800 Card, Wifi Card, removed the graphics card, removed each of the 2 sticks of ram (tried to boot with each stick still in), detached various USB2/USB3 cables. So far the computer fails to even power on.

I'm not sure if there is supposed to be a slight hum from a PSU when it is turned on and plugged in, but there is no sound coming from it whatsoever. SOME power must be getting in, because when I press the "CMOS SW" switch the power button on the board flashes once. If I unplug the power cable, the light on the MB will still flash if I push the button until (to my best estimate) any power is gone.

Either that the MB is fried. I just think it's weird that there is no sound whatsoever from the PSU. It was working fine one minute. Why would it just give out like that? Could it be how I had the system powered and somehow I shorted something out? Everything ran nice and cool all day until this happened, but it was my first system so maybe I messed it up?

If it's not the PSU, it could be the motherboard. -- or maybe the cpu.

Was your CPU heatsink installed properly and correctly?

Here are a couple pictures of the CPU cooler, and the CPU. I went it to make sure the CPU was okay. I'm not sure how much thermal paste is good thermal paste. When I applied it it was to the heatsink not the cpu, so whatever is on the CPU came from the heatsink. The chip looks fine otherwise.

I'm pretty much down to the motherboard, ram, and the PSU now. Is a computer supposed to at least try to start up even if it doesn't have a CPU installed? Still getting no response as I did with all components installed.

There is no attempt whatsoever for the system to start up. Fans don't attempt to move, just completely dead. I don't hear any noises.

I hope it's the PSU. That seems to be my suspicion. It's just weird that it went out so suddenly.

I'm going to rebuild the system with the essentials and take it in to micro center tomorrow so they can figure out whats wrong. Bought all the components there 2 days ago so I shouldn't have an issue getting a swap.

This exact same scenario happened to me the other day. Nothing seemed to work. Removing the onboard battery and then resetting the CMOS finally did the trick.

Holy crap that fixed it!! Thanks so much dude!! I literally tore the system apart but never thought about removing the battery. I wonder why it did this??

Just to confirm, I was able to recreate the problem by putting the computer to sleep. Upon restarting I get a blank screen. I hold the power button to force shutdown, and the issue occurs thereafter. I must wait a few minutes before I can successfully reset.

I wonder what's going on here?

Glad it is not a hardware issue!

The reason probably has to do with power management that is specific to the Ivy Bridge or the MB, I believe there is a bridge helper app on the downloads page that might help:

BridgeHelper 5.0.0
Installer for the official 11.4.2 kernel & power management drivers for Ivy Bridge CPUs. For 10.7.4 only.

If you are not running 10.7.4 and that doesn't solve it, give us more specifics on how you installed and what drivers/kexts you added.
