Hey there,

I got my N56vz last weekend. I'm going to take out the hdd and put in a smaller blank ssd. Then the fun begins! I'm going give it a try from scratch to see if this machine can be used for a MBP replacement. My MBP is long in tooth and having graphics card issues so I'm up for trying this Asus. Worst case is I throw the orignal hdd back in and start running Photoshop and Lightroom on a windoze box.

Stay in touch! This should be a fun ride!!

It's a shame that there's so many issues hackintoshing this model as it'd make such a great MBP replacement notebook... :(
But there's always hope I guess...

My original thought was to try and get this machine up to Lion. My opinion of Apple and the direction it's taking this OS, Mountain Lion and beyond, is less than good right now. I don't want my laptop to look, feel or act like an iPad. I want a professional OS for digital creation... for me that means photography. I couldn't care less about gaming, social networking or any of that other stuff. So if I can get the good, solid parts of this Asus to function as a dependable tool for creating art, then that's what I'm going to try and do.

I now yield my soap box to the next guy....

(yeah yeah, I know... it'll be humble pie time when I realize that ML might have drivers and support for some the parts of the Asus, that I can't get in Lion. SIGH!! Wouldn't it be cool to be independently wealthy and have your very own coder? Oh Jeeves, write me a driver...)

Well this is interesting...

I started the process of building this Asus and thought over my own comments about ML probably having stuff I need to make this work. So I'm in the Apple store looking at some pretty bad reviews from folks about ML, but I decided to download it anyway and give it a trial. Here's the kicker:

My MBP -
Hardware Overview:

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro2,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.33 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP22.00A5.B07
SMC Version (system): 1.12f5
Serial Number (system): xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Hardware UUID: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-0017F2CE79CA
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled

And when I tried to buy and download ML, a pop-up reads "Not compatible with this computer."
Looks like Lion may be all I can
try to get installed for now.

Comments anyone?

Problem is that Apple is restricting ML to newer hardware - so you'll have to find another way to download it - maybe from your hack (that's how I did it). :)
Bear in mind though that's only for commercial reasons (to make people buy newer macs) because ML is actually faster and more efficient on older/slower CPU's than Lion! For example on my Atom(!) powered netbook Asus 1201n perfectly runs ML, faster & snapier than Lion ever did - who could have guessed it!? We're talking about a simple netbook that runs now OS X faster than native Windows 7...heheh

Good hack!

It is all about the $$ after all.

The good news is that Lion is still available even though Apple pulled it from the Ap Store. You need to call 1-800-myapple and go through the menus until you reach a live human being. Then you can ask to buy Lion, go through the purchase and process and wait for them to send you an email with a code to enter into the Ap Store for the download. They also lowered the price $19.99 or so. The only bummer is you have to wait 24 to 48 hours for them to queue up the download and send the email with the code. If I can get Lion basically working on the N56vz, I'll try and upgrade to ML from there.

To the OP, ruFFz, did you get your machine yet? I added this stuff about Mountain Lion and Lion in case you have problems getting a legit copy of the OS to install on your Asus. Hope this is helping!

The original post owner wandered over to another forum thread. Whatever.

I put the SSD in my N56vz. I brought my hack mini online and bought a copy of ML. Started the install and there a quick black screen that popped up with 2 short lines of text about the nvidia chip. Too fast for me to catch the exact works.

Unibeast runs and installs by using -x -v. But can't get the drive to itself to boot. I read some other posts about about changing the boot rom itself to unlock efi totally. Not sure I want to go that route yet if I don't have to. In the other forum thread somebody says they have a process that works for making the Asus laptop he/she has work. I'll wait a while to see if that pans out before manually editing my bios.

later.

This post is from the n56vz. BUT... don't get your hopes up. I installed a usb to ethernet adapter so I could search for stuff easier. Using one laptop instead of copying things over from the other one that is connected to the inter-web, is a lot easier.

Update is that I still need to use the usb drive to boot this thing. I downloaded Chameleon Wizard and some other utilities to see what happens. I'll keep you informed.

later.
