Apple is now offering a new ultra low voltage 21.5 inch iMac that targets more budget-minded consumers.

The specs are:
  • 1.4Ghz dual-core Intel Core i5
  • 8GB of Memory
  • 500GB Hard Drive
  • Intel HD Graphics 5000

Wow this is an interesting new addition to the Mac lineup- it has the exact same innards and performance as the refreshed MacBook Air, a 1.4Ghz ultra-low-voltage mobile CPU with Intel HD 5000 graphics.

The CPU is the Intel Core i5-4260U, which is a dual-core with Hyperthreading and Turbo up to 2.7Ghz.

Here's a performance shot of that CPU from Geekbench:

Alas was foolishly hopeful this might bring Z97 chipset support.

Although I wish they would use Z97, I dont see any benefit in Apple using it whilst they are on Haswell CPU's.

They already have fast flash drives available as an option for most if not all of their systems, and the Haswell refresh CPU's work on Z87.

Devils Canyon chips require Z97 but there are only 2 of them; its possible you may see a refresh of a couple of the top end iMacs later on. But that would mean Apple using a K series chip. I dont think they have done that ever.

So far.

Can't wait to get the SMBIOS - might help with the Turbo issues on the Haswell NUC (currently using the MBA SMBIOS)

wow!! What a BEAST .!! My late 2011 mbp gets 9k. Great machine for surfing and email but that's about it. I can see a lot of businesses buying this one for cash registers.

Effectively this can also be thought of as a Haswell NUC specced up with a monitor.

In the UK Apple prices the new iMac at £899. An NUC from Scan.co.uk, built up costs £480, leaving £419 for adding a 1TB hard drive (£45) to put into Fusion with the 128GB SSD Scan provides and then get a nice monitor (let's have a Dell 29" hi res one instead of the 21.5" of the iMac) and you have £20* left in your pocket and with Fusion drive and lovely monitor I think you have a nicer set up.

Yes, I know the processor is i5-4260U instead of i5-4250U but this is a very small bump.

[This of course ignores the fact that Apple will charge you an extra £200 for a Fusion drive, so if you specced your iMac with that then you will have £220 saving for the NUC set up….]

Dont forget if you go for the Apple fusion setup you can knock off the £45 for the HDD; still a £175 saving though.

And yep, very nice monitor!
