I have a 17" iMac G4 that I'm in the process of modding, and I was able to convert the TMDS to DVI conversion as outlined in dremel junkie's site without any problems. To test the conversion, I have it connect to a Mac mini via thunderbolt to DVI cable. Recognized as "iMac Display" with a 1440 x 900 resolution.

Only problem is that I can tell the color bit depth is lower, there's noticeable color banding in the gradients, etc. While it's been a while since I booted up this iMac, I don't believe that was the case before.

Does anyone know if the monitor color depth was lower on these monitors, and any ideas on how I can have less banding?

When I look under system report, it shows the display as having 32-bit color

Thanks!

Interestingly, I when I hooked up the iMac display to my existing Hackintosh, the display looked great, with the appropriate color depth, etc.

So I'm not sure why, but the mac mini graphics just didn't seem to play well with the iMac monitor

ersterhernd - I've really enjoyed your threads about your various iMac mods.

Thanks for the info! Very useful, and explains the banding. Atlhough I wonder why the monitor looked much better when connected to my hackintosh vs. the mac mini - strength of the signal?
