Spraying Imac 2013

Hi there,

I recently bought an Imac 2013-2014 and the wife wants it red.

I have a compressor and spray attachment but I was just wondering if the little black logo at the front will pop out if I get inside?

If I can pop the logo out and cover the glass I should be able to pretty much spray everything else.

Anyone had any experience with this or can offer some advice? Or maybe you just wanna tell me to 'forget it' which I am half expecting.

Hi Andy, first off I am out of my depth, here, because I don't own that model of iMac, I don't know how hot the newer models run compared to my very hot running 2010 model and I don't know the thermal insulating properties of given paints, re several layers of primer, then several layers of paint and then several layers of varnish. What little I can say is that the aluminium in my 2010 model gets very hot and of course serves as a heat sink to wick heat away from the internals, on top of what the case fans do. Several layers of primer, several layers of paint and then several of varnish wouldn't be on, for me, I think, because I think that heat would dissipate less well through them. I daresay you could up the fan speed using a third-party app but then the iMac is no longer more-or-less completely silent during use.

And then there's the look of it. A home spray paint job wouldn't be up to much compared to a professional powder coated job that would do the Apple justice, in my opinion. Not to say it couldn't look good, just not as beautiful as a powder coat job. I like spray painting things, it became an obsession and an art getting it just right, but they never look quite as good as a professional powder coat job. Again, I don't know the thermal insulating properties of powder coat jobs. I am sure someone must have tried all this, already, but I would do as I am sure you are doing and search those people out and ask about before and after temperatures. It would be interesting to know just how effective the bare metal case is as a dissipator of heat, in percentage terms.
