I have bought an iMac G4 with 15 inches display and I want to upgrate with an Intel NUC for example. But the resolution of this Mac is 1024x768. But I found a 17 inches display for one G4 on eBay, is the best option to first change the display and later change the motherboard, etc...? Please recommendations!

Pick your subject machine and do it once. The 15, 17 and 20 are all quite different. I've done 2 x 17" and 1 x 20" G4. The limited 1024x768 on the 15 inch is very prohibitive, the 17 gives a significant advantage in resolution.

You can use your 15" for extra wires and other parts you may want to use.

Just my opinion...

Cheers!

ersterhernd is right. The innards of the different size models are not compatible. For example the inverter cables and connectors are completely different.

Then neck is different too - it has different springs inside

From what I have gathered from parts diagram, you can put together a 17" version of everything from neck and up (panel, panel housing, neck etc) and install that on a 15" dome. I just went down the road of trying to beef up the 15" dome to support the 20" monitor and it is just not going to happen without external support / hold down structures.

You should be able to keep your "motherboard" for ports - you are not using its main circuitry anyway, most likely putting the NUC where the 3.5" hard drive was. If you choose to put the NUC down low, the optical drive won't clear and likely have to be removed or replaced with a laptop unit. Both have been done.
