The 4540s has very easy access to its "changeable" components (memory, hard drive, wifi card, wan card etc) and there's a few good video guides on the HP site on how to get to and swap out these parts here.................

Those are useful but don't deal with CPU changes, so here's how to do it in easy steps.

Firstly, these components are very susceptible to damage from static electricity, don't wear nylon clothing and only touch parts by the edges, don't touch the pins/connectors.

Note, the manual states that to remove/replace the CPU you need to remove the keyboard, you don't!

1 remove the power cable, battery and base plate, see video above.

2 remove 3 screws in metal shield, see picture below. The middle screw is deep in a recess, once its loose, just leave it in the hole.

3 carefully twist the shield slightly and remove it to expose the heatsink/pipe and fan.........

CPU2.jpg

4 remove the single screw holding the fan and lift the fan and place it above the ram (the manual says you need to disconnect the cable, you don't)

5 unscrew the 4 screws securing the heat sink/heat pipe to the CPU socket, lift it carefully up on the left side first and it will come out from under the case on the right side.

6 unlock (anti clockwise/counter clockwise) the single ZIF socket clamp screw (it will "click" when loose) and lift out the CPU (it must be TOTALLY free to move or you haven't un-clamped it properly)

7 replace the CPU with your new one making sure its located correctly (one corner has a missing pin) and it should drop into the ZIF (zero insertion force) socket, close the clamp screw until it clicks. Apply a little heat transfer paste to the CPU and replace the heatsink/pipe. Refit the fan and its screw. Refit the shield, base cover and battery. Reboot and enjoy.

Your Mac system may need adjustment, be prepared to boot with Unibeast and use Probook Installer to select your new CPU support files.

Windows will want to reboot to add drivers, Linux will just work!

Pete

Don't know if this should be in Workshop, but as it relates only to the 4540s Probook I put it here.

How is the support for i7-3632QM 2.2ghz quad and i5-3380M 2.9 Ghz dual processors when used as a hackintosh? Would the selections in the Probook Installer be the same i.e selecting i7 quad or i5. And would i have to reinstall ML or Mavericks completely after a cpu upgrade or just re-patch the DSDT?

Re-patch DSDT recommended after CPU upgrade (not sure if it really necessary...)

Regenerating SSDT will be necessary. In fact, it is probably best to remove SSDT.aml and use the bootloader features to generate C/P states automatically (specifics depends on bootloader in use).

Thanks very much! I'll be getting the same 4540s you have listed as one of your systems (D8C12UT w/ i5-3230M and installing 1080p LGLP156WF1(TL)(B2) screen w/ dual cable).

For planning for future CPU upgrade would Clover or Chameleon bootloader route be better? It seems some have difficulty using Clover with 4540s...but perhaps that's insubstantial when it comes to hardware. From what I've read, it seems Clover is favored for future updates but I would assume that's in terms of OS.

I definitely prefer Clover...

@mad_sunday Some of the HP Probook 4540s has soldiered CPUs.

Any feedback about this processor upgrading? I've 4540s with i3 3110m with HD4000 and Radeon HD7650m and I'd love to upgrade to i7 3612QM or i7 3632QM but I read somewhere that we can get troubles with heatsink.

"A different cpu will require a differnt Heatsink and replacing the same will not be possible. Using the same heatsink with a faster cpu will cause your computer to overheat." from HP forum

All is fine?
