HP ProBook 4730s Best Mountain Lion USB Installer Guide

This is the best USB installer method for HP ProBook 4730s. This method should also work for Lion and Snow Leopard. I haven't tested this exact method with Lion and Snow Leopard but did use similar for Lion.

I can not advise on other HP ProBook models. The basics of this USB method should work for any computer, the only differences would be the "Extra" supports files required to boot the system. The essential files for all Hackintosh systems are "org.chameleon.Boot.plist, SMBios.plist, Themes". I have used the USB method for a couple years with desktop systems, and posted the basics of it a few times here at Tonymacx86.

This is a quick guide to get the ProBook booting with Mac OS X USB installer without issues, with full screen resolution and keyboard and trackpad fully functional. Please search this forum for other help.

Requirements
• 8GB or larger USB Flash Drive or external USB Hard Drive any size.

• Mountain Lion Installer downloaded from the App Store (to a Mac or Hackintosh)

• xMove 1.5.1 for Mountain Lion

• Your ProBook's BIOS version
Press F10 while booting the ProBook, look in System Information.

• Your ProBook's processor name, i.e. i7-2670QM


Follow these steps exactly
1.. Use xMove to copy the Mountain Lion Installer to the USB drive.

2.. Run HP Probook Installer
• Choose any item and click "Continue"

• Click "Change Installation Location…"

• Select the USB drive you installed the Mountain Lion Installer on.

• Click "Continue"

• Choose the correct DSDT for you BIOS, i.e. for 4730s > BIOS revision F20

• Choose the correct SSDT for you processor, i.e. i7 Processors - i7 2620m

• Choose the best SMBios.plist for your ProBook in System Definitions

DON'T SELECT ANYTHING ELSE, Just The Three Choices Above.

• Click "Continue"

• Click "Install"

3.. Unpack the Extras folder you downloaded from this page.
Drag and Drop the Extensions and Themes folders into Extra on the USB drive.
Remove the IOAHCIFamily.kext from the Extensions folder, see notes below.

Install result looks like this

4.. Install the latest Chimera version and eject the USB installer when done.

Now you are ready to install Mac OS X

5.. Plug the USB installer into one of the USB ports on the right side of your ProBook.

6.. Startup the ProBook and press F9 at the HP boot screen.

7.. Select your USB drive and press Enter.

8.. You will arrive at the Mac OS Installer in about 30 seconds or more.

Notes
• VERY IMPORTANT, Do not use a kext utility to move the Kext into place. Just drag and drop in place.
• Do not apply any permissions changes to the USB installer, leave as default with no system ownership.
• Your display will be standard screen if you have not replaced it with HD LCD.
• If you are not sure about your BIOS version use F20.
• If you have trouble booting to the OS installer, or the OS setup screens put the IOAHCIFamily.kext in the Extensions folder on the USB installer.


Immediately after you are done the Mac OS X setups and arrive at the Mountain Lion Desktop, eject your USB Installer before running the HP ProBook Installer. Run the HP ProBook Installer as normal with all the recommended choices for the HP ProBook 4730s.

Notes
• The display issue in Lion persists in Mountain Lion. It will cause problems sooner than later even if it doesn't seem to exist. Choose the EDID fix in the HP ProBook Installer to install a base Display Override. You will still have to use SwitchResX to complete it. I have also found it necessary to use SwitchResX after a major OS X upgrade, i.e. from Lion to Mountain Lion.


How to Fix HP ProBook 4730s Graphics Issue using SwitchResX
This guide is intended for HP ProBook 4730s Graphics Issue, it may or may not work for other ProBook models.

Background
This solution fixes what are perceived as graphic issues on the HP ProBook 4730s.

Overview
We have to create a custom "Display Override" using the HP ProBook Installer and SwitchResX. The HP ProBook Installer is used to install a base "Display Override" file and SwitchResX is used to append that file with more definition information that make the display work correctly.

Important:
Do not install SwitchResX until your "Display Override" base file is installed and the system rebooted.

1.. Install a "Display Override" base file . . .
Use the ProBook Installer version 5.1b1, choose "EDID generator"

The "Display Override" is installed in "/System/Library/Displays/Overrides/" folder.

2.. Repair Permissions and ReBoot the laptop.

3.. Install SwitchResX, it will ask for your permissions etc.
( I selected "Install for all user's of this computer" to make it a system wide install )

4.. Make the following selection and save before closing SwitchResX.

( you can examine the override file in the your "Display Override" folder by dragging and dropping it on TextEdit in the Applications folder )

5.. Reboot system and open "Display Preferences"

6.. For testing, open "Mission Control" via keyboard, Apple Dock or Desktop, however you activate it.

"Mission Control" should open briskly with no glitches. Now you can use the Apple Dock, in fact everything without fear of graphics issues.


How to Enable HP ProBook 4730s USB 3 for Mountain Lion
Only left rear port is USB 3. Download the kext package at this link provided by aschewe

Use KextBeast or similar app to install only these 3 kext from the package
PXHCD.kext
IOUSBFamily.kext
IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext

I use KextBeast. Drag and drop copies of the Kext files on the Desktop, then run KextBeast. Reboot and Repair Permissions.
I had to install twice before this would stick, I assume something to do with kext cache ????

I have to agree. For me this was the successful instruction. Other instructions had problems with graphics display during setup.

I installed ML 8.0.2 successfully.

Right now BT and USB3 are not working for me.

I want to know.. has anyone managed to get rid of the graphical glitches on his Probook 4730s?
Maybe with an own patched DSDT by RehabMan? He said he has no glitches anymore with an own patched DSDT (but he has got a 4530s with a 1366x768 resolution instead of our 1600x900).
Do you have a dedicated graphic card? I've got the AMD 7470M. Is it a must to disable it in BIOS (before installing ML)?

I also have little freezes e.g. when I start an application for 5-10s. There the glitches appear very often (under heavy load?).
Do all 4730s users suffer from this?

Edit: Background of my question is that I patched my own DSDT, installed the Glitch Fix of the Probook Installer.. but I still have them. I'm not sure but I might have had installed my ML with activated dedicated graphic card. So I just want to hear results of other Probook 4730s users

You might want to add that you have to activate the new custom resolution on the "Current resolutions" tab after the reboot. After that all the graphics glitches were gone for me.
