NVIDIA has released their alternate graphics drivers for OS X Yosemite 10.10.3. These are separate from the drivers Apple ships as standard, and should be considered experimental. These drivers have been known to solve OpenCL issues with certain applications, as well as providing better native GPU power management for certain devices.

NOTE: These drivers are currently the only method to get full acceleration for NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750, 750Ti, 960, 970, and 980 'Maxwell' graphics cards. There are no current Macs with these cards, so support is absent natively in OS X.

If you've installed the drivers before, you may get a notification to update to the new drivers from the built in System Preferences pane.

How to Install the Web Drivers:
In order to use the alternate drivers on a CustoMac, you must first install the driver package. Also make sure to choose NVIDIA Web Driver using the standard menubar or system preference pane then reboot.

NOTE: In addition to setting nvda_drv=1 to NVRAM, as required by real Macs, NVIDIA now adds nvda_drv=1 kernel flag to /Extra/org.Chameleon.boot.plist automatically. There are no additional steps to take.

Please note that these drivers should be considered experimental. If you aren't having any issues, do not install- the native OS X drivers work great for most people.

To reiterate, NVIDIA now supports Chimera/Chameleon through the menubar and preference pane

Wow. That is something else. Congrats to all of you.

Perfect! Looks like I found the driver and was able to install it.

Now, I hope that I am able to use my GTX460 card when I enable the PCIE.

Hello all. A bit of a naive question here. I recently built my first rig based on the recommendations from TonyMac on the customac platform. The specs of the system are here in my profile and am running chimera 4 for boot loading. The build allowed me to have graphics direct out of the box without the need for nvidia graphics drivers installed, the OS X provided drivers worked well.

However, after toying around with the system and learning the ropes of chimera (editing flags, simbios, etc), I wanted to try the new 346.01.02f01 drivers to see how they perform with my GTX760 4GB card. Installed the web drivers without issue using the package supplied from Nvidia and the nv flags were added to the at least my org.chameleon.boot file. Rebooted and all worked well. Graphics on the desktop and web browser rendering was found to be much "snappier" relative to the 10.10.3 supplied graphics. However, system became unstable. Random freezes plagued me following installation, mostly during file transfers and multitasking. Reverted back to 10.10.3 drivers and have been back to my stable system self since. Easy to do with the pref pane and a reboot.

Any ideas as to why I am having this freeze issue? Which log should I be looking in for hints as to what the errors may be? A bit new to the graphics side of things with non-OSX drivers, so wanted to ask where I should be looking for experience on this. I am sure that there are some forum guides/observations/etc.

Such a great community here. Thanks for the time.

Best,

J

Update (04-12-15, 12:30pm EST):

1. A bit more digging on my end through the endless forums. Seems that there is a known issue with 4-DIMMs and Gigabyte motherboards (at least X87 boards) which generate random freezes, much like I described. There were a few voltage tweaks in the BIOS to be made that others have reported success on for fixing freezing and it seems to have worked for my system (at least for now, 4 hours with no freezes). Just rolled back into the new Nvidia drivers, will report later on stability for the folks updating. For now seems to have been a RAM/Motherboard issue and not something to do with the graphics drivers.

Update (04-12-15, 1:00pm EST)

1. Freeze strikes again! During super duper backup the system froze directly after implementing the Nvidia graphics web drivers. Rebooted and then switched to native OS X drivers from 10.10.3 and repeated super duper backup. Completed without issue. Will maintain native OS X drivers and keep an eye out for freezes.

Update (04-13-15, 6:50pm)

1. Problem persisted following reversion to native OS X drivers. Fairly unpredictable, but problems appeared to occur whenever data was written to the hard drive. Ended up reinstalling OS X and chose to take the plunge to Clover as the boot loader to see if this made a difference. Have been more or less stable for the past 24 hours (only one kernel panic, when playing video in Safari). Sleep mode is also working well, which I could never get to run on the Chimera boot loader. Haven't tried to update the vid drivers yet, may look into it. Mods, please move this if the topic is not appropriate for this forum. Apologies, but this is a dynamic process :).

Great!! - I have installed this new Driver to my system (2x GTX 460) . No more freezes with Preview, which I frequently had seen with the older Drivers since I installed Yosemite Now ======== :)
Now I try to uninstall freezefix, which did not really help.

After updating to 10.10.3 and updating to latest web drivers I'm now getting a boot error. The only way my computer will boot is by booting nv_disable=1.

EVGA Geforce 275
Clover

Was working fine with 10.10.2 and the web drivers for 10.2, but those are not compatible with 10.10.3.
