About this Build

This is one of many computers that I have built and not saying this because it is the newest that I own but it has been a complete delight to put together out of them all. The NZXT H2 Silent is the first case I have built in white and what a difference it makes. Everything is clearly visible. There is ample space inside for all my hardware and a spacious 25mm cable management space allocated behind the motherboard tray which is great especially for those stiffer Sata cables. It has numerous HDD bays and within those bays the trays are already holed for 2.5inch drives. Everything is tool less. Although the manufacturer does tend to make sure the thumb screws are tight.

The motherboard socket 1150, processor i7 4770k, CPU cooler and Memory I assembled outside the case
and hooked it up the power supply and monitors to test before moving them into the case to make sure everything worked as it should and thankfully everything worked as expected. The bonus of most of the Z87 Haswell boards is the power button is also on actual board its self so no need for contact the power switch with a screw driver. Once I moved it into the case and connected all the power connections, case fans and USB headers and used that great cable management space I was amazed how good it looked. So here is a picture.

Background

It has been a while since I built a system that gives me all the power I need with plenty to spare. I have recently bought a new camera Nikon D3200 with an extra lens and some filters so I will be using this for editing etc. I was in two minds whether to build another Ivy Bridge or Haswell system. So i decided to bite the bullet and go for Haswell. And I am sure that I made the right decision. Having the hardware from the day of release, fully assembled and tested with Ubuntu I was itching to try this out with OS X Mavericks. And with the release of Mavericks 10.9 it is now possible. Well not only from the OS alone. But from the great software and support from tonymacx86.com. Without the hard work from all the developer testing it wouldn't be possible and I along with many others highly appreciate the time put in to testing everything that delivers a great experience in making this possible.

I remember very well building a Core 2 Duo system and wanted to try another operating system besides Windows. Browsing on Amazon I came across Mac OS X Snow Leopard and wondered if it was possible to install this. After a google search I came across tonymacx86.com that gave me all the information needed.
Created my iBoot disc and I was off, around 2 weeks later I eventually managed to get it installed. And for those of you who have successfully installed Snow Leopard or are about to, when the welcome Video shows up on your screen it was Champagne bottles opening in my head. It was thrilling and exciting and even up to today when I reach the registration screen of any new OS X it reminds me of that Snow Leopard moment.

Installation

1. First I went into the BIOS and made sure that all the settings were correct.

Set the BIOS to Optimized Defaults. Then set Sata Mode to ACHI

Set Initial First Display to IGFX (for the onboard graphics)

The Memory was showing 1333MHz so I changed this to Profile 1 for 1600MHz
Note: For Non "K" Version processors make sure Vt-d is Disabled in the BIOS

2. OS X 10.9 Mavericks is now free from the Mac App Store so that I was able to download it and create my UniBeast bootable drive. UniBeast: Install OS X Mavericks on Any Supported Intel-based PC
Once I had my UniBeast drive I took out my graphics card and used the onboard graphics with an HDMI cable. Followed this guide 10.9 Installation

3. Once I have completed the installation/registration of Mavericks its time to run MultiBeast. But this is where I have to change a couple of things to make my integrated and discrete graphics work together. Thanks to the new Chimera 2.2.1 there is more support for integrated graphics and a new boot flag which is IGPEnabler.

So I select the following in the MultiBeast Screen Shot.
How To Know What To Install With MultiBeast
MultiBeast 6.0.1
DSDT Free

Audio ALC892 Without DSDT
Network hnak's AppleIntelE1000e v2.4.14
Customize I added the 1080p Display Mode for HD4600, and under System Definitions I added iMac 14,2
Select Build then Install (here you can see exactly what you have selected)

4. (This is relevant if you are installing Mountain Lion 10.8.5 as MultiBeast for Mavericks takes care of it for you) But before I restart the system I had to go into the root of my Mountain Lion drive and locate the /Extra folder and open the Org.Chameleon.Boot.Plist see How To Edit a .plist.

Now I want to add the new IGPEnabler boot flag into my Org.Chameleon.Boot.Plist
Adding this

Code:
<key>IGPEnabler</key>
<string>Yes</string<
5. Once I have completed editing my Plist I need to shut down my computer, turn off the power to install my GT640 graphics card. Leaving the BIOS initial first display to IGFX. And when I boot the System for the first time from the hard drive I was able to initiate both graphics options.

Benchmarks

Geekbench stock settings in 32bit Mode

Black Magic Disk Test
(The write speeds are slow on this test due the sandforce controller not being able to handle compressed data that well, this is well known but all other file types should write much faster. The read speeds are great and I write most files to my NAS)

Summary

As I mentioned at the start of this thread this has been a delight to build and install on. So you are probably asking what works and what doesn't.

What works

  • Audio 892.
  • Intel Ethernet.
  • Dual Monitors with Dual Graphics.
  • Sleep, perfectly and repeatedly.
  • iMessage and FaceTime.
  • Power management
  • USB 3.0 probably works with the Universal 3.0 Kext from MultiBeast but I have no devices to test as I use Network Assisted Storage(NAS).

What doesn't

This is by far the most stable machine I own and I am totally thrilled that it's as good as it is.

1. Edit Reason: Changed MultiBeast screenshot.
2. 10/03/2013 Supplemental Update OS X 10.8.5 Supplemental Update 1.0 Added audio see Post# #75
3. 23/10/2013 OS X 10.9 Mavericks released. Updated with guide see Post#157
4. 24/10/2013 Changed the guide to Installation of Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks
5. 28/10/2013 Enable HDMI Audio see Post#193
6. 20/12/2013 Updated to 10.9.1 Applied audio from MultiBeast 6.0.1.
7. 16/01/2014 Been testing iMac 14,2 system definition since 28/12/2013 and its staying. No freezing.

As a rule I generally use Mac Pro 3,1 definition as I find it the most stable. With this definition I have managed to get all my components recognised/working correctly and as this machine is new I may try other system definitions after some more testing. But currently I am happy how this is running.

Nice config !!

Thanks for pointing this out. I have edited my post with the correct screen shot "Without DSDT". Of course If I were using a DSDT I would be happy to share it with you.

I have tried also this without DSDT solution but in my case it not work... i installed the Non dsdt alc892 ( hda enabler and applehda from MultiBeast 5.4.3) and the interface appear in the sound system preferences but i can get any sound , also in itunes the musics don't start to play when i click...
Also y have your same config in bios and org.chameleon

I tried also the same speakers whit my usb card and it work fine , but I would like to have the internal sound card working.

Then my question is did you make any other steep to make your sound work ?

Edit: i fix my sound whit this :

I am using a different AppleHDA that will be released in the next version of MultiBeast. I have no ownership or permission of this kext and respect that testing is underway for everyones benefit. Good news is that it is working perfectly.

Glad you have got it working in the meantime:thumbup:
