GA-Z87X-UD5H - Mavericks - Most USB drives will not mount [SOLVED]

I discovered recently that my USB 2.0 memory card reader would not mount any cards. I thought something was wrong with the reader, but it worked fine on my MacBook Air. I quickly learned that none of my USB 2.0 drives were working. They show up in System Information but not in Disk Utility or Finder. My USB 3.0 drives mounted fine, so I thought the issue was specific to USB 2.0.

I tried reinstalling GenericUSBXHCI.kext, and I also tried this fix, but to no avail.

I ended up biting the bullet and buying a USB 3.0 card reader and flash drive to replace my USB 2.0 drives (once again thinking that it was an issue specific to USB 2.0) only to find that these new USB 3.0 drives would not work either. :banghead:

If anyone could provide some assistance with this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Note: All drives have been tested and are working on my MacBook Air. I've also tried every USB port on my build, but I have the same problem with all of them. However, I have no issue mounting any of the Windows formatted drives to the Windows partition of my build.

Hi Gobias,

Great post, thank you for the log.
I was just wondering.. have you had any trouble with external USB drives?..
I use a 2TB WD HDD for Time Machine, as well as general media storage, and everytime i plug it in my Hackintosh just freezes :\\... nothing will work!
It seems to handle small USB sticks fine..
I have the same motherboard and cpu as you.. running mavericks, 10.9.4 i think (my Hackintosh is currently having the boot0 problem and so i am unable to check!)

Many thanks in advance,

Calum

Calum,

I haven't had that issue of mounting USB drives causing freezes. Have you tried booting up with the drive already plugged in (assuming you're not getting a boot0 error)? I keep my backup drive plugged in all the time for continuous backups.

My USB issues were resolved by deleting GenericUSBXHCI.kext, updating to 10.9.5, and making sure NOT to install USB 3.0 - Universal (which is GenericUSBXHCI.kext) in MultiBeast. That may be worth trying once MultiBeast is updated for 10.10.4.

If you can't resolve the boot0 error, though, the only solution I found was doing a clean install. I also had issues trying to update from Mavericks to Yosemite (lots of kernel panics), so I ended up doing another clean install for that, too. So either way, a clean install may be your best bet.

Thankfully, I haven't had any issues since installing 10.10.2 with Clover. *knocks on wood*

Best to use AppleUSBXHCI.kext, not GenericUSBXHCI.kext...

GenericUSBXHCI.kext has issues on Yosemite that are not likely to be fixed.

Hi Rehabman - Sorry to horn in on this thread but I was just curious where AppleUSBXHCI.kext is located? I checked in my S\L\E folder and didn't see it. However, looking at my USB devices I see the Host Controller for my USB 3.0 devices listed as AppleUSBXHCI.

Doing a search after enabling show all files in terminal didn't bring up any results either.

Thanks

Hi Rehabman - Sorry to horn in on this thread but I was just curious where AppleUSBXHCI.kext is located? I checked in my S\L\E folder and didn't see it.

It is in IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns... provided by OS X installer... used when GenericUSBXHCI.kext is not present.

Thanks very much for all the help guys, really appreciate it.

Gobias: i think i can see a clean Yosemite-Clover install on the horizon... approaching fast lol..

if it's any more help to anyone looking here for answers, i found i was atleast able to access my usual mavericks boot drive by booting through a unibeast usb with the -x flag... dont know if that helps troubleshooting at all!

Rehabman: do we have to move the AppleUSBXHCI.kext file from the IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents.. location to the usual Extras folder (i.e. replacing the GenericUSBXHCI.kext file)?
