I have a hack running Lion, updated as far as it goes. I never upgraded to Mountain Lion because I didn't need any of the features. I have some new programs I need to run for work and they require 10.8 or higher.... so I figured if I"m going to upgrade, I may as well try going to Mavericks. I haven't seen anyone successfully get Mavericks onto a system like mine, but I want to try.

I D/L'd Mavericks from the App Store and made my Unibeast USB stick.

I installed Mavericks and it goes through everything just fine and boots up. I tried Multibeast at this point, and when I try to reboot it hangs at the apple logo. So Back to the drawing board. Next install, I installed only the necessary sound components in Multibeast. Reboot (from the USB to my Mavericks install) and everything works fine. Installed Chimera from Multibeast, reboot from Hard DRive, and frozen at apple logo again.

On to install #3. This time, installed the Non-DSDT option in Multibeast, along with the audio components I need. Reboot from HD, and I'm in! Mavericks is running! Awesome! Only it locks up after about 30 seconds or so!

So I'm stuck. I can install and run fine if i'm booting from the unibeast USB, but I haven't found the right combination of settings to use with Multibeast to get everything running off the Hard Drive.

My system:
Intel DX58SO with Intel i7-960
12 GB Ram
AMD Radeon 6870 with 1GB

Any suggestions on what things I need and don't need with Multibeast that might get this thing running?

For anyone interested, I figured this out today.

When we originally built these systems (I have two matching systems), we picked hardware that was most compatible at that time (I can't remember for sure, but I think we went Snow Leopard to start and then eventually to Lion). I knew that at the time we built them originally, the only adjustments we had to make were the sound and ethernet drivers from multi beast at that time.

So, I decided to only install the things I thought I needed and nothing more.

So here's what I selected in Multibeast to get this working. I did NOT start with any of the prebuilt options. I ONLY put in the pieces I wanted:

ALC 889 without DSDT (I remember this is the sound selection needed from my previous installs)
FakeSMC (the description in multi beast describes this as the only MANDATORY selection)
NullCPU (I read somewhere that for i3/i5/i7 this was needed)
Hnac Ethernet (again, this was the ethernet selection I originally used to get this hack built)
Apple RTC Patch (I don't know why I added this one in, but it talked about prevention resets in the bios and it seemed like a good idea)
Chimera 2.2.1 (obviously, since it was a fresh install I need a boot loader installed)
Basic Boot Options (again, seemed like a good idea to add this one. Not sure if it's needed or not)
Graphics Enabler = YES (because I was pretty sure my video was going to be just fine)
Mac Pro 5,1 definition (I want it to look like I have a bitching mac pro even though it's all several year old hardware)
tonymacx86 black theme (I like black, what can I say)

And that's it. I have a fully functioning Mavericks Install. I couldn't get the app store to let me download iPhoto for free, unfortunately. I went ahead and purchased it. I read stories about people who were able to call in and get redemption codes for the ilife/iwork programs, but they were all on actual apple hardware. I'm certain that approach wouldn't have worked for me, so it cost me $15 to upgrade to Mavericks. Small price to pay.

I'm no expert at this - if this works for others with this board, fantastic. If it doesn't, I'm afraid I'll be of little help in troubleshooting. I put in a spare drive that I had, and I probably installed this 10 times with all different variations of settings before I got to the combination I'm using. It was a bit of a pain, but the end result is awesome.

I saved my settings in multi beast so I can now upgrade my other machine. I've attached that file here if anyone wants to give it a go.

Thank you for the info, it was really really helpful!

Thanks a ton for this! Huge help for me! I have the same motherboard with an i7 920 and these settings work great. I'll add a quick note that the network driver I used (by Hnak) was called AppleE1000e 3.0.4.

I got it to the desktop with current version of unibeast, the multibeast part is having a problem so i am researching it. When i run multibeast the system hangs when i try to boot from it. so the bootloader install is having issues, in addition there isnt any sound output device showing in system preferences and the onboard network card is having issues.. (all of with function in Lion as well as windows on different phyisical hard drives) I notice there is a .MB filein this thread but i think its for a older version of Multibeast,i suppose i can use the older version of multibeast and give it a shot but i will do some more research first. btw.. the network works fine when i boot from USB stick and chose mavericks from startup screen.
