Hello all,
I'm building my very first hack after being an Apple user since Mac OS 8. The build will be based on the CustoMac Pro build on the "Buyer's Guide" section. Like the title says, will the build work on the older Aluminum DVI Apple Cinema Displays like this one? I really like these monitors since I used to have one and do design, photography and coding on it. I'm open to other monitors as well if this will cause any additional headaches. I just thought this would give me a more "authentic" Apple experience. Also helps that these monitors are gorgeous :p

I'll be using these components:
  • Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor
  • Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
  • EVGA GeForce GT 740 2GB Superclocked Video Card

I have an 23" ACD with the DVI connector which is probably the same vintage as your 30" ACD. I ran into the problem of not being able to display the BIOS due to the monitor and the BIOS not be able to negotiate an acceptable screen resolution. But, this was a while ago, and, if IIRC, that was pre UEFI BIOS...I can't remember. So, I put that caution out to you. Try it before you buy the 30" ACD.

BTW, I still have the 23" ACD which is currently dedicated to my Mac Pro. I won't be able to test the ACD upon a newer hack until next weekend, unfortunately.

Thanks for the reply. I've also read elsewhere about the same issues as you're experiencing. To be honest, it would seem rather risky to spend that kind of $$$ on eBay/Craigslist not knowing if it'll work on my setup or not.

Agree. Too bad you don't know of anybody that has this older ACD. However, I'll try to report back next weekend when I have access to my ACD.

Great, thanks Stork

My ACD (23", DVI) works with my Hector build using the GTX 750 Ti DVI. Monitor displays BIOS. So, (fingers crossed) you should be good to go with the same vintage ACD.
