hey guys first off thanks so much for all the support.

I built a 'tosh everything turned out great (GA-Z97-D3H, 32gb ram, 4.0 i7, GTX 970)

basically I should have done more research because I would like to be booting my OS off an M.2 SSD.
this is not possible as my board has no built in slot...

today I had the idea of freeing up a 4 lane pcie 3.0 slot for an M.2 adapter is this possible?
What read/write speeds am I likely to get?

thanks,

karl

Humm... well there are several variables; The Samsung SM951 is designed for the v3.0 PCIe x4 32Gb/s buss and has been shown to do 22Gb/s under OS X, maybe more but not many out there reporting on these devices.

Using Clover, I think (but do not know 100%) that you can boot to the M.2 device on an adapter card as you have described.

If you go do this, please document your setup and the results.

Good modding,

Are you sure you don't have the m.2 slot? I have the same exact setup as you. I know my MB has the slot. You can see it on their site photos. Its between the PCI slots and the CPU. I haven't used mine yet. Hence why I'm on here looking at the do's and dont's. If I remember correctly, you have to give up 2 of the onboard sata ports as the M.2 uses these 2 channels to gain those FAST r/w speeds.

Hope this helps and its not too late.

Cheers!
