Who are they intended for? If only for MacPro 1,1 to 5,1 users, how long before that stops? I can't see it going past the next 2 or 3 years as the machines will likely have been retired or nearly so by that point.

I guess at that point, we'll have a big problem to deal with.

Any other ideas?

I guess it's because the many quadro cards they still sell for the mac pro 3,1 to 5,1 need extra support because they're "special" - in the term that they need driver optimized for rendering, 3d, etc. Also because they are like different from the cards apple uses, so even if it works with default driver it may not work well or be optimized for that gpu.

Apple hasn't updated it's graphic card drivers since 10.8.5 (as of this date/time). So, all nVidia cards newer than the GTX 770 will need the nVidia Web drivers. This covers all the Maxwell chipset cards and newer.
