Hi all,
I am using:
Giga Z87X UD7TH
Intel i5 4690k with intergrated Intel HD4600
Gskill 2x8GB
Apple Cinema Thunderbolt Display (connect with Thunderbolt port on mainboard Gigabyte)
I wonder I can buy Graphics Card (ex: R9 280X) for better performance when using Photoshop or Final Cut ? When I attach Graphics Card, Apple Cinema use vga HD4600 or Graphics Card when running Photoshop or Illustrator or Final Cut?
thanks
kimi

No, you will not be able to use a graphics card with Apple Cinema Thunderbolt Display as the miniDisplayPort connectors on graphics cards are not compatible with the Apple Cinema Thunderbolt Display. This display only can connect to Thunderbolt ports.

Look on Gigabyte's web site for their Thunderbolt 2 PCIe card; unfortunately, it's only compatible with the new Gigabyte X99 motherboards. ASUS has the same type of card, and, again, it's only compatible with a few ASUS motherboards.

Dear,
Thanks for your help.

While your display can only be driven by a Thunderbolt port. Adding a graphics card can still improve software performance. OS X can display via the onboard graphics and still use the r9 280x for calculations.

Dear,
Thanks for your reply.
It means when I run Photoshop or Illustrator, performance will use R9 280x for running, calculation, processing images... Ok?

You have to be careful with multiple graphics cards, e.g. an internal Intel 4600 AND a 280X, when using FCP X. Whilst it will work, FCP X may choose to do rendering using the 'slowest' GPU, in this case the on board graphics. Things will work BUT they will be slower. I never managed to work out how to use an internal graphics card AND a 280X with FCP AND get FCP X to always render on the 280X. In the end we disabled the onboard graphics and just used dual 280X cards.

Adobe products may have the ability to specify which GPU to off load work to, but AFAIK FCPX doesn't. Give the speed of a 280X anyway, I wouldn't bother with an internal GPU to be honest.

Dear Rob,
The problem is when I disable onboard graphic (HD4600) in BIOS, the Apple Cinema Thunderbolt Display is dark, so that I must use HD4600 for display, and I wonder when running Photoshop / Illustrator the GPU R9 280X render or HD4600 render ?
Thanks

Kimi,

No idea I'm afraid for PS or Illustrator. I know that FCP X will use the internal GPU over the 280X if the internal GPU is running thereby making the 280X redundant. I don't use Thunderbolt displays so am stumped.
