NVIDIA is set to launch the mid-range GTX 960 graphics cards around January 22, 2015. It's speculated that they will have the following features:
  • 128-bit GDDR5 memory interface
  • 2GB of memory
  • single 6-pin PCIe power connector

It is also expected that these graphics cards will run cooler than the GTX 760.

Nice more updated Maxwell cards- they will need the alternate NVIDIA web drivers to run tho. Also this means more Keplers will be disappearing from the shelf, such as the 760.

In just a short search on Newegg, the 750 Ti & 760 graphics cards are showing out of stock. One could draw the conclusion that 960 will replace those two cards (even though the 760/770 series are Kepler). I, for one, am looking forward to the debut of the 960 at CES 2015 next week, hopefully. Wonder how long before we see the 950 and the Ti series? Hmmmm.

Aha according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_900_series the GTX 960 will be GM204 based. That's the same chip as in the GTX 970 and GTX 980. So compatibility will definitely be there upon launch.

Well looks like I may be wrong- MSI's new GTX 960s will be based on GM206, so that is a brand new chip. Not sure what that will mean for compatibility. I assume some models will be GM204 and some will be GM206.

Very glad to see that 2GB of VRAM is becoming standard. With 4K becoming more and more affordable, I would love to see the jump to 4GB sometime within the next year or two so I can pick myself up a nice single 8GB card from my two 2GB 660s...

One of the features I really want in a new video card is HDMI 2.0 so its good to see that this feature could become available in a video card that will be cheaper then a GTX 980 or GTX 970. Still I think the GTX 970 is likely the sweet spot given the price and the known compatibility with OS X. Its just a safer bet at this point and the 4GB of RAM won't go amiss on a 4K display.

So the GM206 means it won't be compatible right away? Will we have to hope for compatibility in the next OSX update from Apple?

FYi:
My experience so far with 4K has been that 2Gigs of VRAM is grossly inadequate.
I am suggesting a minimum of 6Gigs, even though 4Gigs might be enough to drive a single screen at 2564x1440, having some overhead is always best.
This might sound extreme but in my experience more RAM is never a bad thing. I can remember just a couple years ago people thought i was insane for having more than 4Gigs of System RAM and now most of us are running well over 16Gigs.

Just my opinion but I think a reasonable guidance based on experience.

Always doing my best to be helpful.
