Hello All.
A year to two ago, when I built my most recent hackintosh, I decided on a dual-drive build with a custom 'Fusion' type drive format.

I have an SSD and a 1.5tb rotational HD. I love the speed by which it boots, and also ample storage space within my home dir to hold all my video clips, photographs, music and other documents.

I very much disliked having my 'home dir' but then storing all my 'large' media files on separate drives.

However, it is not without faults. I can not seem to get iMessage to work (there seems to be ample documentation of problems when using a fusion-style multi-drive). Also, I tire of the added complications for setting boot manager + worrying that system updates may not work quite right (updates to Chameleon, I'm looking at you).

So, I'm wondering, when Yosemite comes out soon, if I should re-format again, and have the SSD be exclusively boot + apps, and then on the rotational HD, setup 'user' dirs, and store my multimedia files there, and use sym links from ~ to the media files directories? This 'should' make the appearance of all files residing within ~, but with a less complex drive structure.

I'm looking to your suggestions, thoughts and comments.

FYI you don't have to manually symlink anything. You can go to Users & Groups, right click on your username and go to advanced options and it will give you an option to change the location of the User directory.

I'm pretty happy with my Fusion drive setup, the one thing I will say is that I don't think it's a real fusion drive... I followed some instructions to make damn sure it's a real fusion drive but it didn't work. So I'm guessing a while down the road it might get slower and I'll have to reformat it and restore it from my Clone. If you're going to do a fusion drive, I would suggest doing it from the installer, you should probably use an SMBios that supports fusion drive during the installation, and make sure you name the LVG FUSION. This is a real fusion drive:
Code:
diskutil cs info 6F050F63-F87A-4690-AED4-7274C27DAC09
Core Storage Properties:
Role: Logical Volume Group (LVG)
UUID: 6F050F63-F87A-4690-AED4-7274C27DAC09
LVG Name: FUSION
LVG Version: 1
LVG Size: 1249576288256 B
LVG Free Space: 57344 B
LVG Status: Online
LVG Sparse: Yes
Fusion Drive: Yes
Notice the last 2 lines. Mine doesn't have that. YMMV.

Given how much of a pita it is, I think you might want to just do a separate ssd+hdd setup. As long as you can have enough free space on the ssd I think that's the better way to go. I went for the fusion drive because the SSD by itself didn't have enough space for me.
