I currently have a Hackintosh running Mavericks 10.9.4 on the Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP5 TH motherboard. Been running it for about a year now, no issues whatsoever - it's been great!

Lately however, I have noticed that when running FCPX (I'm currently cutting a feature film on it) it starts to lag - timeline is not as responsive, playback is a bit choppy here and there - even when using Proxy Media. At first I thought it was my hard drive speeds, but I ruled that out as I tested the hard drive speeds on my HACK Pro and then on my MacBook Pro - I would get the same read/write speeds for both, but my MacBook Pro would edit the same FCPX project with a much smoother, lag-less, and much more responsive experience - even with RAW R3D RED files. I’ve been puzzled because my MacBook Pro has lesser specs than my Hack Pro:

MacBook Pro Specs:
2.6 i7 Processor
16 GB RAM
Intel HD Graphics 4000 - BUILT IN 1 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M - PCIe 1 GB RAM
512 SSD

Here are the specs of my HACK Pro:

HACK PRO SPECS:
Intel i7 3.5 GHZ processor
32 GB RAM
EVGA GTX 680 2GB Graphics Card
256 SSD

Could it possibly be that FCPX is taking advantage of both GPU’s in the MacBook Pro? Where as in my Hack Pro I only have one GTX 680 GPU? I'm really baffled as to why my Hack Pro is more sluggish in FCPX...

ALSO…

In attempt to remedy this, I am currently looking at getting one of these new cards hoping it will help — Can anyone smarter than me tell me if these will be compatible? My goal is OPEN CL performance first and foremost for FCPX…

Thanks!

I have a GTX 680 enabled machine and it seems to work with FCPX just fine. However, I do notice some slower performance on big video files. One note - you have to make sure that the drivers for nvidia cards are up to date on your OS. I had a problem a while a go with sluggish performance off my BMCC 4K files and this turned out to be the culprit.

What are you getting in terms of video frame rate? How has the card performed on Cinebench R15? I'm curious....

You should be getting around 45-48 fps in video performance at stock settings. With a bit of tweaking I can manage 50 fps in Bios.

hey doc.
tried to PM you but the system won't allow it
so i'm reaching out to you in this thread:

I noticed you're running your 4k studio rig with a Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD7 TH.
I'm also an editor and i'm running fcpX on an ancient GA-Z77X-UD5H.

I need thunderbolt bad and I'm looking at your MB.

Did you get thunderbolt working on it?
and if so how did you do it?
everywhere I look on the forum people are having nothing but problems.

Thanks
J-P
