I got around the kernel issue now by unplugging all external hard drives and sub peripherals except keyboard and unibeast usb stick.

Tried that, no dice. I even tried re-downloading the instal file....how strange.

Hello Everyone,

I made the leap today from Yosemite to El Capitan, but was met by significant troubles.

Upon completing my Unibeast install (including graphics fix for NVIDIA), I had what seemed to be a working USB. I proceeded to put the drive into the USB port, ready to install and was met with the following error (with -v):

Code:
Loading Darwin 10.11
Loading kernel /System/Library/Kernels/kernel
Can't find /System/Library/Kernels/kernel
I looked around online and found that others had this problem with Yosemite, but was unable to find any reliable fixes there.

I proceeded to mount from my Yosemite USB and formatted the drive (Extended Journaled, 1 Partition, SSD) and did so successfully. A re-boot required the Yosemite USB to still be in the computer (due to the error "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"), but produced the same error in the end.

Looking for any suggestions of fixes.

Thanks so much! (Build is below)

Can't find /System/Library/Kernels/kernel

  • This seems to indicate that you're not booting to the USB successfully.
  • Unplug all devices except your keyboard, mouse, and the install USB drive and try again.
  • Try different USB ports for the USB install drive; use a USB2 port if you have one.
  • Make sure you're booting to the Clover USB or drive. Use the BIOS hotkey if needed to bring up a boot device menu and pick a specific boot device. If you have two entries for the USB drive (one legacy, one UEFI) try both. If you don't see the USB listed, check the BIOS for allowing boot UEFI devices and/or boot Legacy devices.

Thanks for your fast reply. Unfortunately, I was already trying all of that:
- All devices are unplugged
- Multiple USB 2 ports have been attempted (front and rear of computer)
- I am booting to my SanDisk USB drive, and am able to select my El Capitan USB.

Any other ideas?

Someone else just said set your BIOS to UEFI boot only (they had it set to both Legacy and UEFI boot)

Oh wow! That allowed me to boot! Thank you very much.

However, it was not a total fix. Upon getting past that, I got to the Clover screen and was prompted to boot from my USB. Upon doing so, I only reached a circle with a cross (failed) screen. Not sure what might be causing that, everything should be working well.

In addition, if I enter the settings, I cannot add to the boot args, attempts to simply crash the system.

Thanks again.

12:39pm UPDATE: Moving the USB to the back port of the computer did allow for the device to mount and boot into El Capitan. Working on it from there now...

[Solved] El Cap installer: "Can't find /System/Library/kernels/kernel"

I'm following the guide to install El Capitan via UniBeast.

I've created the install USB successfully, but am stuck on the net step: If I restart my machine, and force it to boot from the USB, it says:

"Can't find /System/Library/kernels/kernel"

So I can never seem to reach the installer.

Any idea what this could be?
