Hey guys,

Im new to the forum but am currently in the middle of building a hackintosh. I currently have an unopened Gigabyte Z77 UD3H which I was planning on using as the MoBo for this build (as I was under the impression that the Gigabyte UEFI BIOS should allow great compatibility within OS X); however, I now seem to finding out that the particular model of the UD3H will not necessarily work due to the Via audio or something of the sort. I was wondering if this is still, in fact, true, and if someone might be able to point me to a similarly priced MoBo which will be able to do what I want. Here are some details about my build:

CPU- Intel i7 3770k
MoBo- Gigabyte Z77 UD3H
Memory- Corsair XMS3 16GB DDR3-1600
SSD- Intel X-25 160GB
GPU- EVGA GeForce 640
Case- Corsair 550d

I plan on using this mainly for video editing with FInal Cut Pro. If someone could please let me know what they think about the Motherboard before I go ahead and install it and ruin everything that would be awesome!

Thanks

The issue with the audio chipset is just that, an issues with the audio chipset. Everything else works as normal, just not the on-board audio. There is a way to get it working in OS X, but I've heard that it can be highly unstable. Otherwise, you can always use a USB or PCI sound card.

I suppose the motherboard you have in your possession is the GA-Z77X-UD3H? If so, yes, that motherboard has VIA audio which is not supported in OSX. You may be able to make it to work by using VoodooHDA in the latest version of MultiBeast, but it is hit or miss and may not always work.

The newly released and slightly more expensive Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD4H has a similar configuration to the GA-Z77X-UD3H but uses Realtek audio and LAN which should be supported in OSX. Or if you don't mind paying a bit more then I recommend the GA-Z77X-UD5H. You can also use a cheaper alternative such as the GA-Z77-DS3H.

Note that if you want to use the GA-Z77X-UD3H or the GA-Z77X-UD4H, I would suggest getting a USB motherboard connector which connects to the motherboard USB headers or connect the USB ports on your case to one of the USB headers on the motherboard to provide 2 or more USB2 ports. This is useful for connecting the keyboard and mouse during OSX installation since the USB3 ports at the back of the motherboard may not work during OSX installation.

FYI the iMic from Griffin Technology will give you audio in and out and plugs into a USB port. No drivers needed. I bought mine in 2004 and it's now connected to my third 'Mac'.

I went ahead and returned the UD3H and bought the UD5H...got a sweet deal on it at MicroCenter! I figured I'd rather save myself the hassle. Should I not have to worry about USB3 operation and compatibility with the UD5H on OS X installation at all? I assume you were suggesting the usb connector more for availability than anything?

Thanks a lot!!!

The UD5H has 2 USB2 ports at the back of the motherboard, and so you can connect your USB mouse and USB keyboard to these 2 ports during OSX installation and they should work during setup and the running of OSX. The other 2 boards do not have USB2 ports at the back, and the OSX setup may not be able to recognize mouse and keyboard connected to the USB3 ports and you won't be able to install OSX if this is true.

One other thing is that 4 of the USB3 ports at the back of the UD3H and UD4H won't be usable under OSX as they are from VIA chipset and there is no support for them in OSX. For the UD5H only 2 of the USB3 ports at the back is unusable.

Why is it that only two are usable? There are indeed four slots and I believe you can expand beyond that for USB3 slots built into the Tower...would the expansion to the USB3 ports on my case be usuable at all or am I strictly limited to those two on I/O, and if so, why? And which two?

Thanks again

For the UD3H and UD4H, as I said before, 4 of the 6 USB3 ports at the back of the motherboards are supported by a VIA chip, not from the Intel chipset on the motherboard. Even in Windows 7 you have to install drivers for them or they won't work. There is no driver support for the VIA USB3 ports in OSX and therefore they won't be usable in OSX. To be specific, the 2 USB3 ports under the LAN port are from the Intel chipset, and the other 4 USB3 ports are from VIA chip.

Which is probably one reason why these two motherboards are not in the Customac list. You can of course connect the USB2 ports on your case (and USB3 ports if you have them) to the USB headers on the motherboard and they will be usable in OSX.
