I realize that, by definition, the answer to this question is most likely, "No," but I thought I'd ask it here, just so I could get a definitive answer: Is it possible to create some sort of recovery partition for a Hackintosh?

The answer is yes.

However it does depend upon the user's idea of a recovery partition.

The "best practice" for the average Unibeast/Multibeast OS X hacker is to always create two partitions and clone using Superduper or CCC from the first to the second and make the second partition bootable after each clone update.

And now if you follow the instructions for a fresh install of Clover/Yosemite you will get the Apple Recovery partition installed as a by product of following the process. See http://www.tonymacx86.com/yosemite-desktop-guides/144426-how-install-os-x-yosemite-using-clover.html

And then there is the guide for building a recovery partition: http://www.tonymacx86.com/alternate...ke-bootable-recovery-hd-partition-clover.html

So it is only a matter of selecting what you want and going and doing it.

I utilize a 500gb USB HDD split into 2 250 partitions. I just use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my Yosemite HDD to the first 250 partition of the 500gb USB HDD. I can boot safely and simply from the external USB HDD. If I need to copy back to the Yosemite HDD then its simple as clicking CCC and setting it up to copy back to the Yosemite HDD. Then I click clone then after it completes I reboot back into my Yosemite HDD.

An Apple recovery partition is not needed if you use Superduper or CCC they will do the work for you. Hope this helps.

Carbon Copy Cloner can create a Recovery Partition and can delete the parition if you don't want one. I didn't realize CCC can actually create a Recovery Partition until a few minutes ago. Learn something new everyday....:headbang:

If I where you I would go with a clover fresh install. It's not all that hard and has a lot of added benefits like recovery partition and working messages.

And Hel0 is right I would go with Clover. I was lucky and installed Clover after I already had installed Yosemite. I didn't want to do a fresh install because of all the audio applications I have installed, it takes forever to reinstall of them. So I just used the tonymacx86 Clover and Yosemite guide and just followed it from Step 4 to the end. The only issue I had was booting because I didn't add nvda_drv=1. Once I added this it booted and everything works. I might go ahead and do a fresh install of 10.10.5. I did a test install on an extra HDD and it works fine like this. I use hardware Raid 0 so this is why I used a test install hdd.

Best of luck...
