Trying to install a Snow Leopard Server vertual machine on Mountain Lion. I've done this with my MacBook Pro but can't get it working on our new build. Here are the components:

1. Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H Motherboard
2. Intel i7 Ivy Bridge 3770K Processor, 3.50 GHz, 8MB Cache LGA1155, 77W
3. MSI Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti(448 Cores)PCI-E 16X Graphics card
4. 32 GB Corsair DDR3 1600 MHz RAM
5. 1 TB Western Digital Caviar Black 7200 RPM Hard Drive
The error message comes up as soon as I click continue to begin the install. It reads:

The virtual machine cannot be started.

Mac OS virtual machines can run only on computers having Mac OS X Leopard (version 10.5.1 or higher) or Mac OS X Tiger (version 10.4.11 or higher) installed.

When I follow that link to goes to a Parallels support page (attached) that says, "According to Apple Software License Agreement, you may install and run Mac OS 10.5 Leopard and Mac OS X 10.6. Snow Leopard Virtual Machines only on Mac OS X Server host computers."

I've checked the BIOS and mad sure Intel Virtualization is enabled. We've tried installing OS X server via the App store on Mountain Lion. Every time we get the same error message.

I know I've missed something but I can't figure out what.

I have the same issue on my Sandy bridge i5 system. I have sent a support request to parallels.
There is a log-file (parallels.log) which can be read in the console but that is very cryptic and does not include any obvious hints, although the error message can be located in that file.

Any ideas? I have the same problem, and would sure love to fix this.. I really need a osx Parallel vm on my mac..

I hate to say it but i finally gave up and sent it back. Got on the horn w Parallels and even had them virtually access the machine to try to figure it out. Obviously it came up that this was a user-assembled-Mac and at that point then had no more support to offer.

If anyone does figure this out I'm all ears...

If you run parallels, you will need to enable Intel Virtualization Technology in your Bios settings. Parallels will not run without this setting.

We did. Disabled anything that could potentially be causing a conflict including USB3. No dice. It was a really weird problem in that it would give us an error the moment it went to start the virtual machine. It's not like we got part way through and then if failed. Refused to start under any circumstances.

I even went so far as to create a windows virtual machine just to be sure virtualization was not an issue and it installed windows just fine. We've since then worked around having to use Snow Leopard so this isn't an urgent issue for us. If anyone has anything I'm still curious to find out just what the issue is.

Thanks again all for your posts.

Oh Snap...

Just found another piece of equipment that needs snow leopard. No mountain lion drivers for our scanner. Anyone else have any ideas of how to get a snow leopard parallels vm to start?

Solution :D

OK... VMware's Fusion: http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/

Downloaded the 30 day trial. Made sure virtualization was enabled and behold it's installing. Not sure what other issues I may run into yet but it is certainly a relief to be making progress again.

I'm also going to try VirtualBox: https://www.virtualbox.org/

VirtualBox has the virtue of being free.

I'm going to be comparing the two over the next few weeks as we use up the 30 day trial. I'll let you know which works better.

Great way to start a weekend...

Cheers

Any luck with creating/loading an OSX VM in parallels?
