Hi everybody. I'm taking the leap to make my first Hack and I am excited and terrified. I actually gutted most of my G5's sexy bits. I am hoping to retain most of the systems core parts: fans, and psu. I have the following components:

G5 Power Mac Case (would like to only cut the back panel)
Motherboard: GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3
Processor: i7-2600k
SSD: 64gb Crucial SSD
16gb G Skill Sniper

(I don't have 3rd party psu or fans!!!)

Here is my question; Can I salvage the the Power Mac's PSU for use on the new motherboard. I know this probably sounds like a terrible noob question but my budget is shot, would love some help.

Nope. Save for the psu.

You can rewire the fans, but to me apple ones are horribly loud. I've used 4 stayquite! (2x 80 mm - 2x120 mm) and they are whisper quite.

It is possible to reuse both the fans(easily) and the psu(not so easily) It would take quite a lot of work, and wouldn't really be worth it. Doesn't allow for any expansion later. I suggest just putting a standard psu into the g5 psu housing. Either by removing the shell, many have done this, see eelhead's mod, or by placing the entire psu in the g5 housing, again its been done. Browse some g5 mods you'll find one like this.

The fans.
Many pinouts around. They run way to loud on 12v. I had mine on 5v from a molex and it was still super loud. I wouldn't recommend doing it. In my post g5 mod there are pictures of how I wired them, or go to insanelymac.

Hi, knowing that it is not recommended, but would appreciate any pointers/links about converting a G5 Dual PS (rated 600W?) to a ATX compatible PS unit (for G5-Hackintosh). Does it require PS logic/board level mods (sensing) or just voltage rewiring/rematching (given that the +25V is not required for ATX)? Had tried googling this subject but not getting much information. TIA.

You will HATE the original Mac fans, I modified a 3rd party PSU inside the OG G5 Case lots of cutting and modding but it looks Original I will send you pictures if you want.

See nice eelhead gave you a link and a photo, I left you to find it yourself sorry.

Eh about the psu reusing.
If you find a ground... thats the hard bit. You have to locate a ground then you simply use a voltmeter to work out what line has what voltage. Then rewire into standard atx 24pin. Could also use the second 20pin power connector on the g5 psu for your cpu 4 or 8pin "extra" voltage connector.
Infact, there must be a pinout from the g5 service manual or something.
