With the new GTX 970 out, I was wondering about compatibility. I did some looking and heard that true compatibility may come later. I am not 100% sure it isn't compatible now though. I know it's using the maxwell architecture. I currently have a lowly 460 and was waiting for a healthy reason to upgrade. And here it is. Should I get it or the 770 after its price drop.

Maxwell architecture is not supported in OSX - We cannot say for sure if or when it will be. The fact that the newer architecture uses less power means in theory that Apple is more likely to use Nvidia over AMD in the next generation iMacs.

We don't know when these next generation iMacs may appear - it might be before Christmas or it could be in the new year. One thing that does tend to happen is new hardware when released by Apple has a factory only release of OSX to support the hardware - the following update often brings some further support.

What you chose to buy will be determined by when you wish to purchase a new card and how much you wish to spend as well as what is actually supported at that point in time.

EDIT : See Here http://netkas.org/?p=1356
Further testing required but there is perhaps a reasonable chance in support being available reasonably soon.
