I am in process of purchasing components for my 2nd hackintosh build. My first one was a rock solid GA-P55-UD4P with an i5-750 that I built in 2010. Its gone all the way from 10.6 to 10.9.4 fully funcitonal without any real issues! I am hoping to repeat my success with this new faster build.

I currently have a GA-Z87-OC motherboard that I was going to base the new build around. However, I am having a bit of a dilemma surrounding the processor choice. I was originally going to go with the 4770k as its a proven processor in the board and in a lot of successful systems but then I realized the 4970k was the exact same price! Unfortunately the geek in me is having trouble looking away from the extra speed :p

I was just wondering if anyone had any feedback using this board or a Z87 board with this processor? I have read through a lot of threads but haven't gotten a sense if this is stable. It was obviously a bit of a nightmare with early attempts on Z87. However, How is it now it now with 10.9.4 and a Z87 running Gigabyte's beta firmware?

The other semi-related question I have is to do with Vt-d needing to be disabled in some instances with the 4790k. With Vt-d being disable will Parallels/Fusion run correctly in OSX?

TIA

I ended up getting the 4790k so I just thought I would update this post in case someone was looking for the same information I was.

The i7 4790k seems very stable. However, I do have turbo boost disabled and Vt-d. One other benefit is that the 4790k will boot with the GA-Z87-OC on firmware's below 8 (mine shipped with 7). This is great as it allows you to simply update the BIOS using Q-Flash to get to an officially support BIOS (8+)

I haven't played around with any VM's yet but will update this thread when I do...

Hmmm. why buy this cpu and then disable turbo boost?

Even without it engaged the 4970k runs faster then the 4770k with Turbo engaged... 4 GHz vs 3.9 GHz and the majority of the time the 4770k is only running at 3.5 GHz...

I would also guess that support is going to get better and better.. So for the exact same price as the 4770k its a no brainer given your not giving up stability.

Just thought I would mention that I got the chip working fine with Turbo. I just had to disable Generate C/ & P states in my plist file! Everything seems stable. :D
