Hi,

I build a 'hack pro' about 4-5 years ago or something, looking to upgrade to a new one. The hacking itself shouldn't really be a problem, but I'm not that familiar with computer components etc, so I'm looking for some help if possible.

I'm looking into getting one of the cheaper 4K monitors as well (more desk space to work on), I don't really know if 1 GTX 770 is enough to power that?

And I was wondering another thing, if it would be a smart thing to build a hackintosh now? Or should I wait maybe 1 or 2 months (or more..) when Yosemite comes out?

Motherboard (this is the hardest one for me), I was looking at these options, the UD7 has thunderbolt, but for the rest I don't really know what the difference is? And if the difference is important for video editing purposes (90% video editing / photoshop etc, 10% gaming probably)

Gigabyte Z97X-UD7-TH
Gigabyte Z97X-UD5H

Processor

Intel Core i7 4790K

Graphics Card

GTX 770, don't really know wich one yet, heard that one with 4GB memory would be better since I'm looking into getting a 4K monitor as well, don't know if that is true or not though?

RAM

Looking into 2x8 at first, maybe 4x8 if I have enough cash, otherwise I will update that later. Does it matter wich brand of RAM I use for use in a hackintosh? No, right?

Power supply

Should 650 Watt be enough to power up this system?

I don't know what case and CPU cooler and other stuff I'm gonna pick up yet, figure that out later.

I know there are a lot of question marks in there, but for as far as I know these parts should all work in a hackintosh. The main thing is the motherboard, kinda in the dark about that one, I know some options just not really sure why I should choose this option or that option if you know what I mean. And I'm wondering if I should buy one now, or wait for Yosemite. Hope somebody can give me some help / suggestions here and there.

Suggest you wait a month or two. The x99 boards will be out Friday with DDR4 RAM and the Haswell-E CPUs. In a couple of weeks we will know if they work for OS X Mavericks. Hopefully, not much longer until Yosemite is released and we know if it works.

Allright, thanks.

Stuff like SSD's shouldn't matter right? SSD / HDD / case / power supply / maybe ram ?

Maybe I'm gonna invest in that sort of stuff / the stuff that doesn't really matter, to split the costs a bit.

HDD won't matter. SSD might if you want to go with the M.2 (NGFF), especially if the board is PCIe x4 connected and you can get a M.2 SSD that is also X4, like the Samsung XP941.

Case - only matterd if you buy one too small for the board you eventually buy.

PSU - size it for a high end board, 6 HDDs and 2 high end GPUs and it will be plenty big enough unless you plan on 3 GPUs.

RAM - wait until you decide on the board as the X99 boards will use DDR4 instead of DDR3.

Thank you very much! I will look into the M.2 SSD's, never heard of that before, guess I'm gonna buy another samsung EVO drive though (I already have one, gonna buy another one to get a little more storage space + speed and use them in RAID).

But for the rest I will wait and see what the new x99 chipset will do for hackintosh in the near future, and look into what's different compared to the 'old' chipsets. And wait for the Yosemite developments, really like the look of the new OS, not that it really matters, but still.
