Hello Everyone !

I'm sure this question is asked all the time in here, i work for a small post production facility and handles about 15 - 20 films per year and we have about 3 edit bays, handle Color Correction, Sound & everything...

We just finished a film for WWE and Fox - i'm assisting on this current film for the hallmark channel, one thing i have noticed is the only thing we do not handle is transcoding of RED RAW Etc files...

I handled the conform for the WWE / FOX title on a 12 core mac pro using da vinci resolve 10, i was a bit let down at the performance of the full maxed out machine unfortunately.

I have decided to build a machine that rivals that machine and has better expandability than the 12 core system we have - here are my questions, what is a good build ?

for my personal build, i will not be able to afford a Titan card however i do plan on purchasing on maybe a few weeks after i build my hackintosh as i have heard they do quite well with red cine x.

however my boss also wants me to build him a machine, so he will be wanting the best card he can get, now its only a matter of picking the best processor, i prefer to get something i can overclock and setup for liquid cooling.

in your guys experience, what would be an ideal build as far as mobo / processor (overclockability taken into consideration) and expandability on the mother board etc...

the machine will need to have enough slots for an AJA card, Decklink Pro, Fibre Channle Card, Thunderbolt Card if they sell them, Firewire 800 card, eSATA card, preferably a capable of handling / holding about 24 TB's in hd's ... 16 TB's is acceptable but the goal is 24 TB's ...

Any recommendations ? let's start with the CPU, should i be interested in a i5 or i7 ?

thanks guys !

The best CPU for a socket 1150 build right now is the I7-4790K. It has 4 cores and 8 threads
and is easily overclocked with a good liquid or air cooler. Some report running it stable at
4.6 - 4.8 GHz. It's not going to be as fast at rendering video as a 12 core Xeon with 24 threads
but it seems that today the graphics cards are taking on more of the rendering process than
they have in the past. The socket 1150 builds are also many times easier to get OS X running on
than a socket 2011 build with an 8 or 12 core Xeon processor. In my opinion the best workstation board for a socket 1150 build right now would be the Z97-WS by Asus. Take a look at it on the
Asus website and read through all the specs and features it has to see if it would work for you.
It does have the option of adding a Thunderbolt II expansion card if you'll need that. An M.2 SSD
could work as an OS X boot drive if Samsung or other SSD makers eventually make that an option. They will have great speed and capacity similar to what the Late 2013 Mac Pro has. Until it (M.2) Samsung SSD will work as a boot drive the Samsung 850 Pro is your best bet to install OS X on.

Here is some basic info on setting up an Asus Z97 motherboard for installing OS X Mavericks. http://www.tonymacx86.com/user-buil...4340-hd4600-thunderbolt-ex-ii.html#post839790

For all of your massive HDD storage needs I would build a separate server dedicated just to that. Then every one in your company can access it via your local network. For that you could use an I5 cpu or one of the 4 core Xeon E3 CPUs.

Most video editing builds (Socket 2011) use the 6 core I7-4930K which can also be overclocked but not as high as the 4790K. The other advantage of a socket 2011 build is the opportunity to go as high as 64 GB of ram whereas 1150 builds can only max out at 32GB. See Shilohh's golden build with the R. IV E. and a 4930K for all the details of an install on that system.

Don't have any experience with the Red graphics cards in a CustoMac, try using search to see if anyone is having success with those.
