I have a hackintosh running 10.9.2 on a Q9450 with 8600 video card that I use mostly to process photos and convert videos for itunes. It's fast enough for normal task, but 3 things bother me. 1) Lightroom takes a while to generate the previews. 2) video conversion takes hours 3) power management doesn't work properly. So, when I keep it on, it uses $3 of electricity a day.
So, I was thinking of building a new hackintosh with an i7-3770, nvidia gts760 video with a gigabyte z87x-ud5h motherboard. It'll cost me around $1000 with 16gb of ram.
However, for $1,000 I can get a refurb i7 2.6 Mac Mini with the same memory. From the CPU perspective, the Mac Mini is about 20% slower, but I get a much smaller form factor and the power requirements would be significantly less. Also, I would not have to worry about software upgrades as much. I lose out in the video upgrade, but I think I can live with a 20% hit for the benefits.
I know this is a hackintosh forum, I'd like to get peoples thoughts and see if I've missed something .
