I've got a rendering application that wants to consume all the ram, then compress, then starts swapping all the available disk space.
i've tried looking all over the internet with no solutions. only some say that it's possible to set a hard limit on a specific application but none describe how to do this.

anyone here smarter than the internet know how to limit an applications memory use on 10.10.4?

i've tried a boot arg that turns virtual memory compression=2, it does keep anything from swapping but once the app runs the machine out of ram it stops working and hangs.

thanks if you can help!

If you go to

File > Get Info > Memory..

...sorry just having a wee nostalgic joke.

From the little bit of coding that I now, if the program thinks it needs more RAM, it's gonna nom up more RAM. What happens when it's used up all the available disk space for swap? Does it crash?

If it hasn't been coded to 'deal' with insufficient memory resources and still work then you may be outta luck.
