It sound like Snow Leopard is on it's way out. I assume the path forward for someone who wants a desktop build and has access to a MacBook Pro running Yosemite is to use the bootable thumb drive and load Mountain Lion on the new build THEN upgrade it to Yosemite. Am I thinking correctly? It would be nice if the Adminitrators would remove guidance/ posts that are out- of- date. It would make it MUCH easier for first- time builders! Thanks for all you do!

Snow Leopard is the last OS that comes on DVD and is therefore the method of choice for those with no access to a Mac to create the installation flash drive.
The purpose of the Snow Leopard installation is to enable access to the app store to download Yosemite (or other).

If you do have access to a Mac then there is no need to install Mountain Lion as you suggest, you can just create your installation flash drive with Yosemite.

The procedures detailed in http://www.tonymacx86.com/basics/104542-im-new-everything-where-do-i-start.html and http://www.tonymacx86.com/general-help/60255-simplest-mac-os-x-installation-guide.html are still valid.
