I've been wondering whether this would be possible and now it looks like it is.
There is a free app available from Sourceforge that you can install on Yosemite
or Mavericks to customize your dock in many different ways. Enjoy !

http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdock/

I've attached a screenshot of how the dock will look in 3D in Yosemite. A few of the
application icons are changed as well with the Liteicon app. (see post #3)

I have seen cdock mentioned favorably before and I will probably take a look at it. If you try cdock, please provide your opinion on ease of use and any value add that you find.

I am using Mavericks on my main workstation with Yosemite machines on either side. Until I find some compelling reason I will keep Mavericks as I really like the dock and icons.

Good modding,

I'm with you on that one Neil. I was perfectly happy with the look of
the dock and icons in Mavericks. It seems that they want to help new
OS X users coming from iOS 7 or 8 on their iPhone or iPad to feel
more familiar with the Yosemite GUI. Apple has also doubled the res.
of the new icons to 1024 x 1024 so that they will still look good on the
5K iMac and all the Retina version Macs.

So with the use of cDock and Liteicon http://www.freemacsoft.net/liteicon/
I think that anyone who doesn't like the look of Yosemite can convert it to
something they can be happy with looking at every day.

Here's the original Finder icon to replace the new one with. You can transfer over
all of your folder and Dock icons from Mountain Lion or Mavs to your Yosemite install.

On your Mavericks install they will be located in:

/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources

Simply copy and paste the S/L/C/CT/C/R path into "Go to Folder" in the finder.
After you open the Resources folder and see an .icns file you want to use in Yosemite,
just right click it and choose copy from the menu and then paste it anywhere you want
to save it to. After you've got all that you need, install them in Yosemite with the Liteicon
app by dragging and dropping them onto the existing app. Couldn't be any easier.

When you replace app icons in the dock (other than Finder or Trash) with liteicon, you'll
need to drag the Yosemite versions off the dock and then restart each app you've removed.
You do this by opening the applications folder or launchpad and double clicking on the app
you've just removed from the dock. I've found cDock and Liteicon, both very intuitive and
easy to use. The most time consuming task is changing all the bright, pale blue folders back
to the Mavs versions. It would be nice if there was a way to change all of them at once but
as of now there is no way to do that AFAIK. At least you only have to do this once and they
stay changed until you revert to the originals.
