I'm sure there's a million threads on here (and the internet in general) about hatred for the Windows OS. I recently decided to run Windows 7 on a machine that was running Ubuntu for a change of pace and more compatibility. As expected, this was a painful and slow process.

After installing the OS, I had to install drivers just to get the internet to work. WTF? I know you can't have every driver for every network device, but come on, there has to be a "base" driver to get things moving. Then I had to install drivers for the APU (AMD A6400k) so I could run XBMC (this is mostly a streaming HTPC). Drivers so it could use GUI?

I had a few issues getting Ubuntu to run on this machine, but that was to be expected from an open source OS. I would think that the "leader" of OSs would do a much better job. Again, assuming, that it could detect the hardware and then seek out the proper drivers and install during the MANY updates I had to install.

Speaking of, why does it say "there are no updates to install", and then I click "search for updates" are there updates to be installed? Stupid. I'm used to my Mac where it just works. Even a Hackintosh is easy. Maybe it's just the switch in OSs, even though I've been using Windows for years in an office setting. I'll get used to the pain of Windows, but I'll always have my Mac :)

Rant over.

I agree. I get that it's difficult to replicate the great things about OS X, especially with the constraints Microsoft has.. but some things are pretty darn basic and they don't get them right. Why aren't there more update packs - something smaller than a service pack but bigger than a patch? Why does each release seem to be 2-3 years behind re built-in chipset/network support? Etc.

I can't remember if it was Vista or 7, but I remember a number of years ago trying to install Windows, only to find out that my storage controller wasn't supported by the installer. I thought, no problem, I'll use a USB or CD to add the driver during the install. It turned out that the installer ONLY supported adding drivers via floppy disks. I hadn't used or owned a floppy drive for about 10 years and was absolutely shocked. After hours of googling and experimenting I was able to slipstream the driver in, but that was pretty absurd.

Are you serious? There are some scenarios where OSX cannot do as well as Windows. For example my USB wi-fi card doesn't work at all on Mavericks while on Windows I just connect it via USB and I have an internet connection in a few seconds - that's how fast Windows automatically installs drivers for it and finds the right wi-fi network.
Another device is ADSL modem that does not work on OSX and works on Windows.

I also agree that OSX is a better OS than WIndows, but not in every aspect. Often Windows handles some things better.

This. Windows is superior when it comes to drivers, in my opinion and experience at least.

...... Often Windows handles some things better.

Like FILE HANDLING. Windows has got OSX beat hands-down. I mean seriously Apple, no MOVE? And don't even get me going on trying to merge folders, what a nightmare.
That being said, after 29 years in the Windows world (yup, I'm old :headbang:) I am so glad I made the switch to OSX permanently earlier this year after a couple years running it as a hobby.

I also sincerely hope Windows sticks around for many years to come as I make a nice little bit of extra dough on the side fixing Windows issues; usually spyware/malware related. Any clients that have bothered to actually take my advice to get into OSX from Windows?; I rarely hear from them again.

I wouldn't use the word "stupid" for Windows / Microsoft. They once had a monopoly
on consumer and business desktops and very large profit margins, but they failed to
innovate and prepare for the future while other companies took the initiative.
Every other Windows OS that is released is generally considered a dismal failure and
doesn't sell very well. I believe that roughly 25 % of all Windows PCs are still running XP.
Would be equivalent to 25% of Mac users still running Tiger or Leopard on their Macs.

I agree, Microsoft has fallen way behind the likes of Apple and Google in this Post
PC age. They made billions and billions of dollars selling software that Apple and
Google now give away for free. The Windows phones and tablets will never catch
up with iPhones, tablets and Moto X's. MS is quite a few years late to the party
and is struggling to adapt to the changing market. Not sure that PC gaming and
buying Minecraft will be enough to keep them relevant over the next 10 years.

What will turn the tide for MS and return them to their former glory will be the
emergence of a new improved Microsoft Bob. Bill Gates even said so himself.

Read about it here:

I do miss Clippy and Rover from way back in the XP days over ten years ago.
