I picked up this USB audio device for $7.99 to test- it's very nice looking, aluminum and it is fully native. Works perfectly and with good sound both mic input and headphone output. C-Media chipset. Recommended.

I got 2 of them; one for an old Optiplex 760 tower Hack to provide sound to a sound bar, and a second one to have on standby when I update other Hack systems that might lose sound as a result of the update.... will have working headphones at the very least. Good value.

What's about the digital output?

Oh- that's the onboard audio. I have that enabled in the pics too. In this picture you can see Realtek ALC 898 onboard (motherboard audio) and my MOTU 8Pre audio device in addition to the USB Audio Device.

I have a C-Media USB device for one of my hacks as well. Excellent purchase.

Probably a dumb question... Is this in case you can't get onboard audio to work?

@tony -- how do you get the sound options to show up in the menu bar? I can only get the volume slider...

Hold down option key and click on the speaker.
