When a sound is played, there is a loud CRACK!, like when you plug a cable into a powered audio jack. (which, yes, is stupid to do.) The sound, or music, or whatever, is then good for a period of time. Then, it's like the sound cable is disconnected because the Mac hasn't made a sound for a while, like maybe 3 or 4 minutes. And then, the Mac plugs in the cable and CRACK! plays a sound for incoming mail.

I have the Realtek ALC889 (RealtekRTL81xx.kext) connected to an old JVC receiver which powers the speakers.
Just switched to Clover boot loader and I've tried using the Multibeast audio patch, and the audio_cloverALC-100-v1.01.command - both have the crack problem. Didn't have this problem with Mavericks/Chimera.

I google crack and pop (everything but snap) but no solutions.

I have the same problem on my Asus P8Z77m-pro motherboard and ALC892 audio. When I initially upgraded Mavericks to Yosemite running Multibeast 6.1 fixed like it always did before. This week I did a fresh install of Yosemite and now I get snap, crackle and popping. The audio is going to sleep and waking back up when needed. Loud pop when it wakes up, quiet pop when it goes to sleep.

There are a few threads that talk about the issue but I haven't figured out how they apply to my setup yet.

Check this thread

Installing antipop cures most of the problem. Would be nice for a more "sophisticated" solution.

Changing the profile of your machine to "fix" the sound crack problem might cause more problems for the Yosemite iMessages security checks.

Suspect we need a DSDT or Clover guru.

yeah for the time being antipop seems to be it...
