Hello everyone.

Two days ago I've successfully managed to install OS X Mavericks on my PC (you can find the details inside my profile). I exactly followed the instructions provided in the 10.9 installation guide:

  • Created a bootable pendrive using my bud's Mac Mini - OS X Mavericks from AppStore + UniBeast
  • Installed OS X using recommended settings: UEFI BIOS Defaults, disabled VT-d, enabled memory Profile 1. I didn't even have to use any bootflags to reach the installer :)
  • Installed MultiBeast using the default DSDT Free profile, adding ALC898 driver, network driver and enabling 1920x1080 resolution for the bootscreen (this is the first time I've managed to get the bootscreen to use my native resolution, I'm pleasantly surprised)

Everything works just fine with the exception of audio. It's there, (output at least, haven't tested input yet) but I'm getting some weird interruptions - the sound disappears for more or less half a second every random period of time. It's really annoying, it makes listening to music or doing anything that requires sound output virtually impossible. What's worse, it happens even when the computer is totally idle - I didn't even have a chance to get it really busy.

What I know for sure it that this is not a CPU issue. I watched CPU usage for a longer period of time - no sudden peaks, it never exceeded 10%. I even tried to see if I would get some noticeable chokes by moving iTunes window around with a song playing - the window was moving around just fine when the interruptions occurred.

I tried reinstalling the entire system to make sure it wasn't my fault, but even after a clean reinstall the problem is still there. The sound card works like a charm under both Windows 7 and 8, so it's not a hardware issue - I'm assuming that this must be some compatibility problem of the driver, since from what I've read the ALC898 driver works fine for most people who installed the entire thing the proper way under OS X Mountain Lion.

I did not try any bootflags, according to your tutorials it should work without any of them.

My question is, obviously: does any of you have any clue what might be the reason and how can I fix it? Or maybe the other way round: is there any way I could help you debug it and find the cause of this problem?

Thanks in advance for any kind of help :)

EDIT: Problem solved by installing VoodooHDA 2.7.3, also from MultiBeast. Time will show if there are any other problems. Still though, it would be nice to get the "proper" driver working w/o any problems. If any of you has some way to get it working please post the answer here. Thanks :)

I have the exact same problem with my GA-H87N-WIFI which uses ALC892. There are weird random "hiccups" in the audio. To make things weirder, I can even see the volume control jumping up and down when it happens. And if I'm watching a video, the video will halt with the audio as well. Will try Voodoo HDA to see what happens.

The very same thing happens to me on AppleHDA.

Hiccups are gone on VoodooHDA, but:

  • I've got a terrible mess in the audio settings (way too many HDMI devices, but the green jack ain't there)
  • Audio crackles if I turn the equalizer too high in iTunes
  • I can hear microphone noise which goes away when I unplug my mic and plug it back in
  • Using audio communication in Left 4 Dead 2 causes game stutters every time I do so.

It would be best to use AppleHDA, so I hope there is some way to fix this. Oh, and good to know that this isn't an ALC898-specific issue.

If you are interested, lets see what shows in IOReg when the sound interruption occurs.

Download and install IOReg. [Guide] How to Make a Copy of IOReg

1. Remove Voodoo and install MultiBeast/ALC898, restart
2. Verify audio problem and quit
2. Start IOReg
3. Reproduce the audio problem for 5 minutes
4. IOReg/File/Save a Copy As....
5. Compress the file

Reply with the application, source, description of the audio problem and the zip file. Thanks.

Any luck with this, I'm experiencing the same audio hiccups on the analog outputs. In Logic Pro X it seems to hold up everything during these hiccups?!?

Music from iTunes was playing in the background, but the interruptions are system-wide. Just like the other guy described in this topic, the volume slider is jumping up and down if you click the volume icon. Looks like a driver problem to me, nothing application-specific.

IOReg file attached.
Thanks.

Try this:
1. shutdown system
2. unplug power, speakers and all other audio devices
3. hold power button down for 30 seconds
4. plug in power and speakers
5. restart

Last suggestion, try MultiBeast 5.4.3/ALC898.

Funny thing, (still on the driver from MultiBeast 6.0) everything works fine on the black jack, hiccups are gone. Green is still buggy. I'll try to install the other one and see if this works.
