Apple brought out a slew of new products last week, including a spec bump to Ivy Bridge CPUs on the Mac mini. Many people don't know that the Mac mini "desktop" houses a low power mobile CPU and mobile graphics, making it basically a laptop in disguise. So what's the performance difference between a mobile Ivy Bridge CPU and a desktop Ivy Bridge CPU?
The new Mac mini is much faster than it used to be. It's staggering how powerful the mobile chips are, expecially the quad-core i7 Mac mini server configurations. The low end Mac mini has a mobile Ivy Bridge i5-3210M, which compares favorably with a desktop Ivy Bridge Core i3-3225, as featured in the CustoMac Mini 2012. However, the higher end desktop CPUs like the i7-3770 outpace the Mac mini server mobile Ivy Bridge Core i7-3615QM. We put the new Mac mini scores against our Ivy Bridge i3/i5/i7 to see the raw performance numbers. Check these Geekbench scores out.
The mobile Intel Core i5-3210M 2.5GHz vs. the desktop Core i3-3225 3.29GHz. Each CPU has 2 cores and 4 threads.
The mobile Intel Core i7-3615QM 2.3GHz (4 cores 8 threads) vs. the desktop Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz (4 cores 4 threads, not overclocked) vs. the desktop Intel Core i7-3770 3.4GHz (4 cores 8 threads).
Interestingly, the non-hyperthreaded desktop Core i5-3570K scores almost as well as the hyperthreaded mobile Core i7-3615QM. This CPU can achieve much greater scores when overclocked. The desktop Core i7-3770 and i7-3770K are in a class by themselves, scoring much higher. If you have any of these Macs or CPUs, or an Ivy Bridge based laptop, list your Geekbench results here!
